In that store, I've found good prices, attractive deals, and even, occasionally, real treasures on more than one occasion. However, there's something that worries me deeply and that very few dare to talk about: the psychological abuse that, sadly, many of the employees suffer.
I'm a frequent donor and shopper. I've had the opportunity to closely observe the work environment, both inside the store and in the back yard. On one occasion, I tried to express my concerns directly to the manager, but unfortunately, her attitude was rude and defensive.
I don't mean to point fingers, but I think superiors should take a moment to reflect. I've witnessed yelling, humiliating words, and totally inappropriate treatment of employees, often even in front of customers. Phrases like "I'm the one who pays you," said in an arrogant and contemptuous tone, are not only unnecessary, but they deeply damage the dignity of the person receiving them.
If someone feels the need to impose themselves in this way, at least do it in private. Publicly humiliating a hardworking person should not be accepted in any environment, much less one that ostensibly promotes community service and aid.
Furthermore, there are young people who work full-time, yet whose wages go directly to a church-related rehabilitation program. I understand that there may be good intentions behind this system, but I find it unacceptable that these young people don't even bring a decent lunch. Where is the humanity in all of this?
I've heard difficult stories from some workers, who don't dare speak out out of fear, necessity, or ignorance of their rights. And I want to be clear: this is not something new. This has been happening for years. I'm simply tired of keeping quiet.
What worries me most is that, from what I've observed, the three highest-ranking managers within the store share similar attitudes. This makes me wonder with concern: who will take action if those who should lead with respect and example are precisely those who abuse their authority the most?
And if, as a result of these words, any employee suffers retaliation, it will simply confirm that everything said here is true. That's why I speak out with the sole hope that someone with conscience and authority will decide to intervene. Let them do so not for me, but for all the people who haven't been able to speak out of fear.
Finally, I want to make one thing clear: I don't need you to call me, write to me, or invite me in to speak "privately." I'm not looking for attention or explanations. All I want—as a frequent customer and as a human being—is for someone with decision-making power to observe what's happening and do the right thing. Words are no longer enough. What's needed is willpower, action, and humanity.
These people are employees, they are human beings. They deserve to be treated with dignity.

Read moreThis thrift store on a 1 to 10 basis is a 5. I love seeking out new mom and pop type shops. This one seems well organized, but isles are dangerously thin. Even though there was a 50% off of everything, prices were way out of touch for the spirit of second-hand shopping. The only thing that managed to be reasonable was a few picture frames I picked up. What continually floors me now about nonprofit organizations that run thrift stores? Is it supposed to be a win-win situation because things are donated. So it's profitability to the non-profit side but also the idea of making offerings of merchandise so that people can afford it, not as a big monotization. To me the idea of thrift has become so trendy in profitability and googling the value that it takes the joy out of finding treasures and for poorer people to be able to afford things they wouldn't normally be able to. It feeds into a skewed version of our political climate. When I say the prices are outrageous, it's almost fivefold. It was cool to look around, but...
Read moreThe cashier that works at this place makes up her own prices. There is a price board in the store that says shirts $7.99 to $9.99. I figured the ones with the zip ties cost more. So i grab the ones without the zip ties. As i got up to the register to pay, the cashier started giving me ridiculous prices for the shirts. $19.99 for this one $29.99 for this one. I was like miss these don't have any zip ties why are you pricing them so high. I thought at the most its $9.99 a shirt. She mentioned that the zip ties were not placed on these shirts or removed by someone. I was like, i have 15 shirts without zip ties and all are 19.99 - 29.99 each?? I guess someone just randomly goes into the store to cut the zip ties off. After spending an hour of my time at the store I had to place them all back. Very disappointed in this place. Not shopping here again!!! Just lost my business. Thanks...
