The Cathedral Basilica of St. Vincent de Paul of the Abbey of Latrobe. The first monastery Ordo Sancti Benedicti (OSB) in the USA, and motherhouse of the Benedictine Congregation of America-Mount Cassino. Founded by His Excellency the Most Reverend Monsignor the Father Boniface Wimmer, of the Archabbey of St. Martin of Beuron, Svevia, Germany, in the XIX century. His Excellency Monsignor Boniface Wimmer, OSB, was the first Abbot of this Abbey of St. Vincent de Paul of Latrobe. The great Abbatial Cathedral Basilica is a structure in the neo-romanic germanic style, and the Altar of the Sacred Celebrations was a project of the very young Father Dom Renè Henry Gracida, Monks-Priest of the Abbey and future Bishop in Florida. His Excellency Monsignor Gracida is living, 101 y.o. He's a true Catholic traditional Bishop. The Holy See of Rome, Spiritual Center of all the universal Christianity, granted to this Monastery and its Pastoral Jurisdiction the honorary title of Archabbey, and to its Abbot " pro tempore" the honorary title of Archabbot. Dom Renè Henry Gracida OSB was driven out the Abbey in the early 60s by the Coadjutor Archabbot His Excellency Monsignor Rembert Weakland, OSB, a modernist Monk and monastic Prelate. In the 1977 Pope Paul VI promoted Monsignor Rembert Weakland OSB, 50 y.o., to Archbishop of Milwaukee, Metropolitan Bishop of Wisconsin. The Abbatial Cathedral Basilica of St. Vincent de Paul of Latrobe is the most important spiritual center of the Benedictine Catholic Way of...
Read moreI’ve been a member of the parish for a little over two years, and I have grown in my spiritual life during this time. Additionally, the parish is very child friendly which is good. I have a very active 19 month old who cannot sit through an entire Mass.
Last night we were at Holy Thursday Mass. My daughter was playing more loudly than I would have liked leading up to the start of Mass. I was somewhat apprehensive about her making too much noise that evening as well as at each service during the Easter Triduum. We were both watching the solemn procession with the monks and incense when all of the sudden, the Archabbot was in our pew thanking us for coming to Mass…in the middle of the procession. It blew my mind, but made me feel very welcome. I am no longer apprehensive about my baby making...
Read moreQuite some change at the parish in mid-2021. Great group of parishioners, but unfortunately Fr. Tom has been relieved of his parish duties, sent packing to the town of St. Mary’s, PA, and a new pastor, Fr. Richard, is now in his place. The parish does not have the same feel, especially with Fr. Richard being out ill quite a bit and the associate pastor Fr. Dan, nowhere to be found regarding the parish, no longer holding that position (there’s no one in that position and various monks are celebrating mass with a great lack of continuity). Losing Fr. Tom has been a significant detriment to Homilies, which have suffered and are not as insightful. I still suggest SV Basilica Parish to everyone, but the parish has suffered significant losses. Hoping leadership will...
