McGowan & Sons — Local services in Valparaiso

Stopped in for the first time this past weekend. First impression was super positive. Employee greeted me with a smile and took time to ask me how I was doing and ran down the menu and how things worked while I waitied in line (everyone else was equally friendly and helpful). I gave this a 4 star however just simply on price. I have no issue paying for premium quality food but their meal kits are way too expensive. They have their prices listed but that does not include the fish. The meal kit I selected was $22 and for that I got a few slices of asparagus, a side dish of potatoes and a few ingredients to help with a sauce to cover my salmon (still needed to supply my own wine for the sauce). The fish was a bit expensive but since it is fresh and expensive to ship I have no issue with that. I just feel that the meal kits should be closer to $8-$10 since you still need to pay for the fish. I think they are a great shop with a lot of potential but prices may or may not hurt them in the long run. I would go back again but only...

A paradise for both Foodies and Cooks. McGowan's offers a selection of fresh seafood that is beyond compare in this area. The salmon, tuna, shrimp, and grouper (to name only a few items) will tempt and delight (and follow you home if you are lucky). If you don't see it, ask; it can probably be ordered. Owners Rob and Leslie are eager to consult with you and offer advice for cooking and party planning. If you don't cook, catering is one of their specialties. Lunch is available in the cozy side room. Soup of the day (I was lucky enough to be there for shrimp bisque.) Plus your choice of fish and drinks from full bar are all available. Restock your kitchen with sauces, Asian necessities, couscous, paella, knives, and much more. Their wines are selected by Leslie and include "natural" wines with little or no sulfites. Another local place, owned by a local family that you cannot believe falls in a smaller Midwest town. Fresh seafood in Indiana that is such high quality and that you will NOT find at any local grocery store. More than just your fish monger.. they also do "Meal in a Minute" offerings that take all the stress out of dinner on a busy weeknight. As a FT working mom of small kids - these save me at least once a week. I'm still able to cook dinner at home but with all the ingredients prepared ahead of time.
