It's been over 2 years and one of my son's wisdom tooth extraction holes has still not healed properly. We have been back to the dentist multiple times with infections and clean out. We have now consulted with a new oral surgeon, and further surgery has been scheduled to correct the problems. Our new oral surgeon stated that everyone has an off day. Unfortunately, that "off day" has caused considerable pain and consequences to my son.
Dr. Roden was informed of my son's allergy issues at our wisdom teeth removal consult and informed that he could not take ibuprofen due to it triggering hives and facial swelling. My son's allergist even prescribed an epinephrine pen and prednisone as additional precautions.
After surgery, I had to inform the nurse again that my son could not take ibuprofen due to it triggering his facial swelling and hives. She then told me he could just take the prescribed prescription pain medication, supplement with acetaminophen, and use the liquid lidocaine, as needed. The prescribed pain medication contained acetaminaphen. I questioned her on taking too much acetaminaphen and she said I could just calculate the correct amount.
I recieved a follow-up call from Dr. Roden that evening, and also mentioned to him again that my son had tried the ibuprofen, but it did cause him to have facial hives and additional swelling, and as per his allergist instructions, he should not take it anymore.
After three days of stretching the prescribed pain medication, my son was still in severe pain. I called Dr. Roden's office and informed them of his pain and requested a refill of his pain medication. Neither Dr. Roden nor his nurse called me back to question my son's pain or symptoms. I was told by the receptionist that Dr. Roden would refill my son's prescription but that I would have to come pick it up due to it being a narcotic. The prescription was for 5 additional pain pills.
By the next evening, my son was in excruciating pain and his symptoms pointed to dry socket in both of his bottom extractions. I called the after-hours line, as this was a Saturday, and was put in touch with Dr. Roden directly as the on call doctor.
Dr. Roden was dismissive and expressed very little care or concern. I was rudely informed that I'd "need to call the office on Monday to bring him in" and that he "couldn't call in any pain medication", which I had not requested. Only after I pressed Dr. Roden for anything that could be done to alleviate the pain did he inform me that I could clean out the sockets myself with salt water using the provided syringe and liquid lidocaine. By this point, I was out of the lidocaine and Dr. Roden did agree to at least call that prescription in for me.
I took my son back in on Monday, and he did have dry socket in both lower extractions. Neither Dr. Roden nor anyone in his office took the time to talk to me regarding the dry socket. Dr. Roden did not see my son or check on him at all.
Not altering a patient's post-operative pain management plan when you've been informed 4 times of your patient's special circumstances with regards to ibuprofen is not acceptable. Especially when your patient has the potential for serious complications. These complications have led to considerable additonal cost and pain for my son.
If you have special medical needs or circumstances, I suggest consulting a different...
Read moreDr. Roden is amazing! Him and his staff make you feel like family from start to finish. Everything went smoothly. He is very professional, and educates you through each step. His nurses and staff are amazing. I have gotten my wisdom teeth removed by him, and most recently had a dental implant put in. Both were very easy for recovery. The implant I have almost felt no pain… that’s how you know you have a great surgeon. The staff makes you feel calm before the surgery, and answers all questions. Dr. Roden also thoroughly explains and takes the time to answer questions. Dr. Roden has personally called me the night after both procedures to check on how I was feeling. He also has a nice office, and they gave me a blanket during the surgery to make me more comfortable. He is truly the best, and I recommend him to all my friends and family!!! I believe he is the best in Birmingham by far!! When I was first looking for a great oral surgeon, I posted on what’s happening in mountain Brook Facebook group, and his name took over the comments: full of others stories and how much they recommend him! I am so much more confident, and my smile feels so much better...
Read moreThis was the first time I’ve ever been to Dr. Roden’s office! I had made a prior post on Facebook reaching out for recommendations for an oral surgeon, and several had recommended him! The reason for my visit was for wisdom teeth removal!
Dr. Roden and his staff was very professional, informative and courteous! We asked multiple questions and not one time, did we feel rushed or uncomfortable! Upon leaving, we had a concern/question for him. We called and told the nurse what was going on, and she said he would call us back promptly! 10 minutes later, he called and handled our concern! At 8:53 PM, I get a call from Dr. Roden checking on me! That was impressive! You don’t see this too often where the doctor calls to check up! Being in Sales, I understand how important the follow up process is for repeat and referral business! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Roden for any oral surgery need! Thank...
