7/31/14 ~80 F, calm winds, and fair seas.

430 am: Met Cpt Jake and 1st mate Mike promptly at Rudee Inlet in Va Beach. Brought a cooler with drinks/sandwiches. Mike debriefed us on a loose schedule of the day's events. Targeting sport-fish ~70-75 miles out in the Gulf Stream. 3 hours there and 3 back. 5 of us: four men and one 100lb 18 year old woman (who reeled in bigger and as many marlin as the men).

830 am: Reached the Gulf stream, Jake and Mike deep bottom fished for live trolling bait called Tinker Mackerel.

9 am: As we were catching Tinker, one white marlin hook and catch

930: Still filling the live bait well with Tinkers, literally watched a white marlin come up to the side of the boat and take one of the Tinker off a rig that had not been sent out yet. That's 2x white Marlin before 10 am.

10-12pm: Trolled and caught a few more white marlin

12-2pm: Continued to troll; caught a mahi mahi, a few more white marlin, and a 50 lb yellow fin tuna. Stopped occasionally to get some more Tinker, resulting in a byproduct catch of a 20lb gray tilefish (delicious table fare).

2-3pm: Had 5 white marlin hooked at once. You'd think it be chaos on the deck, nope, Mike and Jake guided us through the situation, landed 4 of them. Do NOT yank hard on the pole, it'll rip the bait/hook right out of the bill. Dammit. Jake will let you know what to do and not to do.

3pm-6pm: Headed home. Fish were cleaned at the dock for a very reasonable price.

Delicious table fare for many and 10 white marlin catch/release memories and some awesome pictures.

Bottom line: Trip of lifetime and will join Jake again ASAP. The price is cheap in relation to the experience and expertise of this Charter and Captain. Tip the 1st mate heavily (at least 20% of the trip total). Bring drink/food. Be ready to have a great time. Awesome Awesome Awesome. Can't wait to try again.

Our catch this day: 10x white marlin (we all received Virginia citations) 1x Mahi 1x Yellow Fin Tuna 1x Gray Tilefish

Other wildlife seen: Giant sea turtles Flying Fish Hagfish (look as pretty as their name) Squid Black Bellied Rosefish Tinker Mackerel

Beautiful sunrise, friendly 1st mate and captain. Boat is safe and sturdy, was under going some minor aesthetic rehab in cabin during our trip....

Overnight Offshore Trip:

I want to start off by saying I normally don't take the time to fill out reviews but after fishing with Capt. Jake Hiles for over 12+ times I felt it was time to let everyone know who and what to expect when fishing aboard the Matador.

Day 1:

Started off deep dropping for Black Sea bass, and Blue line Tilefish and we caught our limit. As the evening came we tied up just off the Norfolk canyon and started chunking for Tuna. Well 30 minutes later all of the lines started running. To our surprise it was not tunas but a load of 9 to 12 foot sharks. We released two 9 foot Dusky sharks and lost about a 12 foot Mako not to mention several that cut the line. Fishing got cut short around midnight due to a storm but it blew out of the area around 4:00 AM.

Day 2: The sun was rising and since I was one of the first to wake up I assisted 1st mate Jarred in setting out the lines for the troll. 15 minutes later we had a White Marlin in the spread. We caught and released a total of two White Marlin the fast trolled our way to a area where there had been some tuna bites. Unfortunately no Tuna wanted to join the fish in the box. So we ran for home, and on our way in Capt. Jake spotted two big Cobia lurking around an inshore buoy. We landed one of the two which turned out to be 45lbs. Now that's the way to top off a trip!!

If you are ever in the VA area and you are looking for a seasoned Captain please give Capt. Jake Hiles a call. Inshore, offshore he is simply the best. I will say if you want to go Offshore take advantage of it, and book an Overnight trip. For a few extra $$ you get a ton of fishing time in for the money as well as a big box of fish.

The accommodations are more than adequate. The Matador sleeps 6 comfortably, and the boat has a very smooth ride even in rough waters.

5/5 for Matador Charters! By far some of best all around saltwater fishing trips we have been on. Captain Jake, Shawn, and the crew of Toro have put us on fish year after year out of Virginia Beach. Capt Jake and Shawn are extremely knowledgeable of these waters and know how pattern fish in all seasons. We have always been treated with respect and have felt like a part of the Virginia Beach fishing community when we are with them. I have always appreciated the crews support for our military and Capt Jake's patience to work scheduling around training to allow our service members the opportunity to fish with Matador Charters.

Every trip has been enjoyable no matter what we catch. Being out on the water with Jake and his crew has always made for a great day.
