Columbia Island — Local services in Washington

Quiet places are rare in a metro area of almost 5.4 million people. Passed through by thousands every day is an island few visit. Part natural and part man-made, Columbia Island offers peaceful views of D.C.’s skyline through weeping willows. With an often-empty free parking lot, here are places to visit while on the island:

1. Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial Grove, an off-the-beaten-path memorial honoring the former president,

2. Lady Bird Johnson Park, a national park with open grass, benches and waterside picnic tables,

3. Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial, a 1935 memorial honoring those who lost their lives at sea,

4. A pedestrian bridge to the Pentagon where people spot wildlife from,

5. Mount Vernon Trail, a popular path with bicyclists and runners.

I even used them in the middle of the night. It could be better lit at night but they have done a very good job slowly rehabbing...
