We had an amazing experience with Orcas Wild Kayak rentals. We opted to take a few boats out on our own, and I love that they give you the opportunity to do so without a guided tour. Don’t get me wrong- guided tours are almost always the way to go! You’ll see and learn so much more about the local land, sea, and wildlife with a professional guide in tow (they always know exactly where to look for the coolest stuff!)- but sometimes you just want to paddle around for a few hours with a couple friends and well- see what you see. We launched from their North Beach location and paddled west along the shoreline to Point Doughty- a natural wildlife preserve ONLY accessible by boat. It is the perfect place to pull up and stretch your legs with a short hike up the rocky ridge to experience the strikingly beautiful northern-most point on Orcas island. It has sweeping 270 degree views (my guesstimate) to the north, west, south, and even partially back east toward Mount Baker, which was beautifully visible and difficult to stop staring at on our return trip to the ditch. Toby and his crew were incredibly kind and helpful, getting us through the quick paperwork process, then out to the boats, going thoroughly but efficiently over safety measures, and setting us loose. We had a blast and I am positive that you will too. Don’t miss an opportunity to get out on the water...
Read moreBioluminescence Kayak Tour Review ✨ Taking a bioluminescence kayak tour was truly one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had on the water. From the moment we pushed off, the calmness of the night set the perfect mood. As our paddles dipped in the water it came alive with a neon-blue glow—like liquid stars swirling beneath us. Every movement, from fish darting under the kayak to the brush of my hand in the water, left a shimmering trail of light. Toby our Guide was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about marine life. He and his colleagues explained the science behind the bioluminescence in a way that was easy to understand but still fascinating. I also appreciated how they emphasized safety and respect for the natural environment, keeping the group small and quiet so we could enjoy the phenomenon without disturbing it. The highlight for me was stopping in the middle turning off headlamps, and floating under a sky full of stars while the water glowed with every ripple. It felt like being in another world. I’d recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique adventure. Just remember to bring quick-dry clothes and a sense of wonder—you’ll definitely need. An unforgettable night that blends science, adventure,...
Read moreMy kiddo and I had a fantastic kayak 🛶excursion with Calvin as our very knowledgeable and indefatigable guide. We launched from West Beach and traveled to Point Doughty. The water was a bit choppy, but we managed to keep up just fine despite getting doused from the wake of a boat. Once we landed, we had a light snack/lunch, walked along the trail for a bit, and listened to Calvin comment on the shells 🐚 🦪, seaweed, and wildlife 🦀 in the tidal area. Then, off again for the return back to West Beach. On the enjoyable little excursion, we saw bald eagles 🦅, harbor seals 🦭, sea lions, and possibly some playful sea otters 🦦, but they were so quick we can’t be sure. All in all, it was a great outing with wonderful weather, friendly and accommodating staff, pleasant company in our group, and we enjoyed...
