I recently planted a privacy hedge along my property line due to a neighbors back porch being directly in line of sight of my backyard. I looked at some options and landed on using a clumping bamboo like some friends of mine had done in their yard with success. I went to a different nursery at first and purchased what I thought was clumping bamboo (because I was told repeatedly that it was clumping). I had specifically asked for ONLY clumping bamboo. I wasn't looking to create a problem with my neighbors or ruin my own yard. After making the purchase with the other nursery I did more research and realized they were either willfully lying to me or just didn't know what they were selling because they sold me a very invasive variety of running bamboo. I confirmed this with several people at Barton Springs Nursery. I can't remember the sales guys name but he was helpful and then transferred me to another associate that was more of a bamboo specialist who helped clarify things very well. He said he'd get his buyer to contact me by the next day with availability of clumping bamboo they would soon have. Within 45 minutes I received a call back from Casey the nurseries buyer who suggested Alphonse Kharr Bambusa Multiplex for me. The prices they offered were also upfront and honest to begin with as opposed to the "sale" I had supposedly gotten at the other place. I felt confident working with Barton Springs and after getting a refund at nursery #1 I ordered the correct plants from B Springs. They arrived when they said they would and they are in fact exactly what they said they would be. Now I have them planted and they are beautiful. Just need a little more time and I'll have a great hedge. I would recommend these guys for being true plant enthusiasts not just sales people and for their honesty and...
Read moreI’ve been looking for beneficial nematodes for the past couple weeks and was frustrated to discover that they’re not easy to find these days. They are a pesticide free way to control fleas, ants and just about any other pest and a must have for any Texas lawn or garden.
I found them online of course, but I prefer to shop locally or at least order from a small business. Aside from the mega corporation which I will not name, I only found two nurseries who carry them and ship them overnight, both are out of state. With the Texas heat however, I wasn’t sure as the nematodes are alive so must be refrigerated and cannot be left on my doorstep in the heat as it seems all shipping companies do these days.
I’ve been to a couple local nurseries and several local garden centers with no luck and haven’t been able to get anyone on the phone at some other nurseries in town. I called Barton Springs Nursery yesterday evening to ask but they were closed so I left a voicemail. I just received a call from Dave, the manager at Barton Springs Nursery, returning my call and letting me know that they DO carry beneficial nematodes! He was super friendly and even took the time to check the price and type of nematode for me.
Not only do they carry something that is nearly impossible to find locally, but at a fraction of the prices I found online. It’s always great to find a small, local business that still has that hometown feel. I’ll definitely be buying my nematodes from Barton Springs Nursery from here on out and will likely replace them with my regular nursery given the excellent customer service....
Read moreBarton Springs nursery has always been one of my favorite places for plants for either inside the house or small garden projects around the yard.
But I decided to convert my yard to a more water-wise native planted landscape and both myself and my contractors could not have been more impressed with the availability, quality and turnaround on the plants needed to complete my project.
Andrea and Mazzy could not have been more helpful when I stopped by in person to pick out some shrubs and trees, with an impressive knowledge of the right plants for my difficult (shady, hilly) yard.
Their plant buyer Alex was also an absolute lifesaver. Even if it’s currently in the 80s a week before thanksgiving, most nurseries in town have already transitioned away from stocking most of the plants I was looking for. Alex was instrumental in helping me source ground covers (many of which BSN grows in-house), stay within my modest budget, etc. And he has the patience of a saint; I am embarrassed by the amount of calls and emails I sent over the course of a month to him, but he was always gracious.
Which brings me to the thing I love best about Barton Springs Nursery: the people. Everyone is just so damn friendly and helpful, and the way everyone works as a team to make sure everyone who stops by leaves happy is a wonder to behold. Even team members I only spoke with on the phone, like Ben and Susan, went above and beyond to make sure things were in order for my project and I got every single plant I paid for, and that they looked a great...
