We adopted a cat three days ago and we were completely unaware that she was extremely sick. While going over her adoption details the tech helping us did not once mention that anything was going on other than normal stresses of being in a new environment. The first day we brought her home she was sneezing a lot and that progressed into extreme drooling and labored open mouth breathing. I took her to TWO emergency vets, and then a regular vet within two days of having her. The Humane Society was of zero help, stating that we could surrender her back for vet care, but there was no guarantee that we would get her back, not to mention having to pay the adoption fee twice on top of all of the vet fees that have already incurred. The issue is not taking her to the vet, the issue is that they willingly put her out for adoption knowing she was in critical care, and let us take on that responsibility unaware and unprepared. The cat is now stressed out to the max because of the multiple car rides and vet visits, being in a new environment, and not feeling good. When I asked to speak to a supervisor the answer I got was, “They will call you in 24-48hrs”, that has yet to happen. I’m extremely disappointed and frustrated with these people who claim to care about animals, but willingly put her at risk and also my other cats at risk, because yes, it is a VERY spreadable sickness. Luckily, she did not die under my bed as I thought she was well on her way to, but that does not make any of this okay. Please be careful adopting from these people. *EDIT* We also just found out she has a broken right arm that we were not told about! This people are so horrible.

What a wonderful experience we had at the Westland Humane Society 2 weeks ago. Upon entering, we found a spacious and clean reception area where we were greeted by cheerful people who were eager to assist. They allowed us to walk around and meet all the precious dogs and then Abby, a total rock star, introduced us to "Trick Or Treat." He was the happiest puppy with such a shiny coat. It was clear he had been well cared for and socialized. Abby relayed all the pertinent information about the little guy, and we felt he was the perfect fit for our home. The adoption process went smoothly. Abby was incredibly supportive and gave us lots of tips to ensure the best possible transition period as Trick Or Treat, now Maurice, began his new life with us. Thank you, Abby! Maurice has been with us for 2 weeks, which makes him 4 months old. He's acclimated wonderfully and is developing strong bonds with us and his 4 cat siblings. He's learned to sit, shake, and come to us on command and is eagerly learning to walk well on a leash. It's evident to us that he was loved in the Humane Society as he was both physically and emotionally strong enough to make his move a complete success. We absolutely love him. Thank you for facilitating a top-notch experience and for helping to make our family complete.

The Short Story: Absolutely horrible experience that myself, my husband, and our poor dog are still paying for. Our adopted dog, 8yo Murphy, was prescribed WAY too much medicine which caused SEVERE stomach issues, continued vomiting, and him refusing to eat for almost a week. During the visit, he vet was extremely rude, condescending and bothered by any questions we had.

The Long Story: We adopted Murphy from the Detroit MHS shelter and they give you a free vet check-up within the first 10 day. We decided to take Murphy to the Westland shelter for the check-up because it's closer to our house. He had an upper respiratory infection when we got him and they had him on a low dosage of antibiotics. When we went in for our check up, he was almost over his infection and was on the mend - only coughing once that day (previously he was having coughing fits every hour or so).

When the vet came in to see Murphy, she was condescending to my husband and I who were new parents to this 8 year old boy and had a few questions. I asked her a question about his inner eyelids drooping and she didn't answer the question and just said "Have you ever even had a dog before? YES they have inner eyelids. He's fine." We were also worried about these weird breathing episodes he was having and she again asked us "have you ever had a dog? That's just a a reverse sneeze," as if we would just know what she was talking about. (Once I pressed, she did show us a video on her phone of a dog reverse sneezing).

She listened to his chest and agreed that he was almost over his cold and was just going to give some more medicine to be sure. She asked if we wanted X-rays of his chest, even though they weren't necessary, and we said no. The nurse came back in with the medicine, which were all of a sudden HUGE capsules that he was supposed to take 4 in the morning 4 at night (previously we had been giving him 2 small pills in the morning/at night).

The nurse then said she'd take him for his X-ray and blood work. I explained to her that we declined the X-ray and the doctor had made NO mention of blood work. The nurse pressed the X-ray even though the vet said it was completely optional. They insisted on the blood work to confirm if his white blood cell count was high from the infection (duh, he had an infection and they ended up being only a little elevated) and we pretty much had no choice.

We gave him his meds the first morning and night and the next morning. That night he refused them along with any other food. He refused food for the next day, and we would sit for a full hour with him to get him to eat so he could take his medicine. The fourth day is when he started throwing up and we stopped the meds and made an appt with our family vet.

When we took him to our family vet, she took one look at the pills and directions and was shocked. She said that he was COMPLETELY over-medicated and that no vet in their right mind would assign that much medicine. After hearing our story and checking out Murphy, she realized that his stomach was extremely messed up and making him very sick.

She cut out food and meds right away and limited water. Our poor pup is miserable, can't eat, and is throwing up bile THANKS to the MHS vet. Our actual vet informed us that he should have been taking 1 pill in the morning/at night instead of FOUR. (TWO pills per day instead of EIGHT).

Murphy had to have 3 injections to help with his stomach and to counter-act the overdose of medicine - which of course was costly to us and unpleasant for our pup. He now has more medicine (more cost to us) for his damaged stomach and we need to keep him on a bland, home cooked diet of rice and chicken for the next few days. ALL of this could have been avoided if the vet would have just prescribed the right medicine OR if we would have just NOT GONE to the MHS vet in the first place.

I am disgusted with the MHS vet and would never ever take my dog back there again. Vets are supposed to HELP animals,...

I'm on the fence with them I love animals more than people most of the time and I've adopted quite a few animals from them and at the time I had a kitty I adopted manyyears ago he was year an half and he was almost 18 yrs old when I have a animal I have till the end and my Shepard i took to the vet got no where $125 later just given bag of fluid and info I called around to finda payment plan I had a hundred tho my name they said yes we do bring her in I told them what the vet said Well half hour later they walk in and tell me exactly what the other vet said which i told them and handed me a large bill I said there was suppose to be a payment plan and why am i paying for info I told you?I came here cause my dog needs help and I was told shewill possibly die so I'm begging crying for help them they said we do payment plans but you have to pay big percent of it up front and i told them i called told them i had hundred bucks I just gave money to another vet I need to save my dog an she said come we will help and now your charging me like the other vet giving her fluid send on way unless I have money? I refused to pay had to go thru all the higher up people but no one helped my Sadie girl! I've gave so much money to them and saved quitea few animals from them I thought they were there to help they turned us away, I drove 2 1/2hrs next day for help to a vet that cares for animals not just money and he was gonna come in earlier next day and wanted her back we were suppose to leave at 5am she passed after leaving humans society 2 days later and was almost like paralyzed half that day into night until she let out a yelp we slept by he in living room and jumped to her side and it was her telling us good bye after we both touched her and said were here she took her last breath. I swore id never give another penny to them i begged and pleaded for help had 100 and in 3 days we both would of been paid. But instead I paid for a urn and cremation! Thanks mi. Westland humane society foryour support when I supported you my whole life cause my mother was giving to you when i was young and then i started as a adult. We will all meet are maker in the end and you will have to explain why you choose money over life!!!so I'm sureI'm not the only one! I only went there cause a catwas dumped at my corner and was crying at all thecars and would not get out of street and was beautiful and i rescue but I had no room at all and i have my elder cat who's not 18 and the kitty had eye infection and stuff i can't let my baby get sick and that's probably why it was dumped it was sick but it was mixed Siamese so pretty so out was only one who would takeat that moment and it...

If I could give this place a zero I would! Don't take your pet here these people care nothing about your animals.. I don't know where to start about this horrible Nasty place. I scheduled appointment 3 month ago then the day of the appointment they call me and tell me they have to reschedule which was another mouth later I talked to the lady at the receptionist desk which was a very nice women (not a man) like the veterinarian said I Spoke to .. and told her that I had spoke to somebody about getting my dog rabies distemper and heartworm and flea and they told me they could do it for $50 because he is a service dog and is adopted from them and I'm low income so she went out and got the so-called veterinarian which she's not a veterinarian but she thinks she's cute but she's not she's a very ugly and disrespectful person. They took me in the room and tell me it's $50 for a rabies shot and that's it. I tried to explain to her that that's not what they told me on the phone which she stood there and raised her voice at me and asked me will what do you want me to do! And I asked her why did you even bring me back in this room I asked the receptionist about it B4I I come back here because they want me to get a credit card and I refuse to they just want to get more money from you... So I asked her to let me speak to her boss then her boss comes in there and gets in my face who does that ! somebody that is crazy and don't know me she's lucky she said she called the police because she is 1of them (Sissy) like what is calling the Police gonna do lol tell me to leave which I would have been gone by the time they even got there dummy! Another one of them taxpayers tht waste our money! When he could be out helping somebody instead of your stupid a.. this is how much they care about animals they never petted my dog said anything to my dog all they did was ask me for money they care less about animals.. do not take your animal here.... I will pay $100 for a rabies shot before I give you anyth you will never get a penny and I will not refer anybody to you until you get rid of those so-called veterinarians that think ther cute and have no clue what Ther doinG.....
