Very interesting place, there's history everywhere! Chat with the stones, let them tell you what they've seen!
During the Northern Seven Years War (1563-1570) the fortress was besieged six times. During five of these it was commanded by Denmark-Norway.
The largest of the attacks was made in spring 1566. A Swedish artillery unit, positioned on the hill of Fontinberget, fired almost 3 000 rounds at the fortress, making a breach in the walls. This gave ten fänikor (one fänika equivalent with approximately 500 persons) the opportunity to push through. Three times they were thown back, but on the forth attempt they successfully made it through and seized "Röde Torn" (Red Tower) and planted a Swedish flag at the top.
Two defending soldiers volunteered to detonate the gunpowder magazine, located in the tower. This was a certain suicide attack, so they were both promised that their families would be provided for. The two soldiers were successful, causing a massive explosion which smashed the tower apart. A Danish cronicler wrote that "the Swedes were thrown into the sky like crows or other birds, and not one of them came from there alive". It is believed that around 250 Swedish soldiers were killed in what we now know as the Bohus Bang.
The Swedish king Erik XIV was so furious that he saw the failure to conquer the fortress as a result of treachery within the Swedish ranks. He personally executed one of the commanders, Nils Sture.
The Danish king, Frederick II, on the other hand, was so happy that on his sarcophagus he had several marble relieves made of which one depicted the Bohus Bang.
It is said that one of the two soldiers family received a piece of land which is still owned by his descendants.
The fortress was attacked or besieged 14 times, but was never captured!

During my visit to Sweden I visited the fortress over the weekend. I took a bus from Gothenburg City center to the fortress. I think it was a 30 to 40 minute ride. Luckily I had good weather the entire weekend and was able to enjoy the sites and scenery throughout the day.
Some areas might be difficult for kids and those weary of tight and steep spaces especially as you climb the tower and walk around some of the walls, some hills are quite steep and make it difficult for strollers.
I ate lunch there and ordered a burger from the little stand in the center of the fortress. I ended up throwing it away. As I bit into it the burger it was extremely raw and not cooked all the way.
It was quite windy at the top of the hill. There is a little gift shop at the entrance and exit and a small cafe or restaurant that specializes in ice cream a little further down the hill.
I had a feeling that my public transit card wasn't going to work on my way back into Gothenburg. I believe I only purchased a card that works within the city. I'm not too familiar with how public transit in Sweden works and realized that my card wasn't accepted on the way back. I ended up riding the bus anyway. Not sure how to remedy as the text on the screen was only in swedish.
If taking the bus, make sure you have the right fare for what's needed.

One of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Northern Europe, and a key bastion of Norway for hundreds of years that was never captured in combat. Despite the neglect and demolishment efforts by the Swedes, it's still making a huge impact when visiting today. I was surprised how simple the exhibition and explanations where though, hence the low rating. Since its basically a Norwegian fortress that was demolished after it changed hands to Sweden after the treaty I guess there is little interest from Sweden's side to make more efforts. Norway should offer to fund a more elaborate exhibition and restoration and share the responsibility of the maintenance of the fortress with the Swedes.. I would imagine that a lot of the visitors are Norwegians anyway.

Zamek jest wyjątkowym miejscem dla dzieci i dorosłych.
Sporo faktów historycznych ukazuje rys tutejszej okolicy Króla Gustawa i Świętej Brygidy.
Twierdza Bohus ukazuje władczość tutejszej okolicy.
W zamku poza historia, wspaniałymi widokami na okolicę, można zaznać sporo atrakcji dla dzieci: dmuchany zamek, Komnaty,
Scena do tańczenia, puzzle, układanki, konie z turniejem rycerskim, fosa z przeprawą tratwą, rzutki do celu, łucznictwo, rzucanie podkowami i wiele innych.
Miejsce można odwiedzać z psami i kotami.
Właściciele obiektu wyrażają na to zgodę.
Bardzo Wam Dziękuje za sporo dawk historii i cudowny czas z dzieckiem.
Do zobaczenia niebawem.

The castle is a unique place for children and adults.
A lot of historical facts show the features of the local area of King Gustav and Saint Bridget.
The Bohus Fortress shows the authority of the local area.
In the castle, apart from history, great views of the surrounding area, you can experience a lot of attractions for children: bouncy castle, chambers,
A stage for dancing, puzzles, puzzles, horses with a knight's tournament, a moat with a raft crossing, darts to the target, archery, horseshoe throwing and much more.
The fortress has many nooks and tunnels, despite its medieval origin, it contains a lot of multimedia elements.
You will pay in cash here.
Thank you very much.
This is how a person exchanges money in Poland.
The place can be visited with dogs and cats.
The owners of the facility agree to this.
Thank you very much for a lot of history and a wonderful time with your baby.
See you soon.

Definitely a really nice and fun experience, was very impressed and pleasantly surprised by the English audio guide (completely free of charge). Definitely makes the experience nicer. What took it down for us a notch was the fact that there were obviously space for some events (a scene) as well as cafeterias but nothing was open. We went in September, it is plausible to say that during the high season they have more stuff going on.
Regardless, very nice atmosphere and very cool landscape as well as the ruins of course. Also, free parking!

I searched for an interesting thing to do for the birthday of my son while travelling from Copenhagen to Oslo. We didn’t have high expectations and went in with little to no knowledge on what there was to see in the Aeroseum.
We were very pleasantly surprised about the size of the collection, the variety and the depth of the information given. Even the location and its history was very interesting. There was a perfect balance between you-can-touch-this and you-can’t-touch-that, so people of all ages can enjoy this exhibition. And let’s be honest, who has never dreamed of sitting in a jet? It was great to roam around the place and get surprised with yet more interesting things at every turn.
Not only are there aerospace-related items to see, but there is a whole hall dedicated to games and toys. And you can even make model planes, if you’re up for it. Even the bathrooms are worth a visit, since going there will make you pass through a hallway where there are other rooms to visit.
And last but not least, the price for visiting is extremely reasonable. Apparently there is a section reserved for tickets that were bought in advance, so we recommend doing that.
We wish we could have spent more time here, because we were nowhere near done seeing everything there is to see. All in all, we highly recommend visiting the Aeroseum!

Absolute must see if you're in Gothenburg.
We visited for a couple of days as part of our 'travel cheaply' experiment and this was one of the venues on our list.
It is about a 30m bus ride out of the city, and from where we were was conveniently 2 buses away.
There is a bus stop outside the entrance lane of the museum so very easy to get to. And because it doesn't look like an entrance I took a photo to make sure new visitors feel confident.
BTW a day travel pass is £8.88 which puts the UK to shame.
When you get to the entrance, it is a little shed where you buy your tickets. £20 for 2 adults.
All the museum is underground so what you can see above ground looks pretty much like a car park.
You take a stroll around a hill then start heading underground.
This place is HYGE. It is several interconnected underground hangars filled with planes, helicopters, flight simulators, a presentation suite, educational area, cafe, shop, etc, and everything is big.
If you like this sort of thing then you are going to be in heaven.
All fully accessible and very well done.
The cafe is exceptionally cheap BTW and I'd suggest supporting it.
There are special exhibitions and talks that take place.
An absolutely amazing place to visit.
We loved it and I whole heartedly recommend you go visit.

Great for kids or adults. A can't miss if you are near Gothenburg and enjoy Military history, history or just really cool feats of engineering. As the Cold War was heating up the Swedish decided they needed a nuclear shelter for a fighter base so they created a TOP SECRET airbase inside a mountain. That TOP SECRET base is now a museum with tons of aircraft and other military equipment. In addition to the military gear there is a cafe, a play area for kids, little kids, kids at heart and a comfy theater where you can watch a never ending series of films about aviation around the world.
We thought the price was very reasonable for a family pass. As of this writing they offer guided tours on Saturday and Sunday. I cannot confirm or deny the languages of the tour because we were there on a Tuesday.
There is also a scenic overlook that takes you up a short and easy hike on top of the fortress to view the nearby airport and some additional military gear.
We ate "Fika" Swedish "snack or break" at the Cafe inside the fortress. We had coffee and excellent muffins. Everything was very fresh.
Surprising great bonus...FREE super fast WiFi throughout the entire bunker.
Highly recommend!

The Aeroseum is definitely worth the visit. Lot of cool exhibitions and you can get up close and personal and even get into some of the planes and helicopters. The simulators are fun but cost extra depending on which simulator you want to try. The bunker in which it is housed is an experience in itself. It is a short drive from Gothenburg but easy to get to and ample parking, even for mobile homes. There are 4 electric car chargers (slow charging) also. You get really up close and personal with the jets and helicopters and suddenly realise how immense they are. Great stories underlying that these were all in service.
It could do with a bit of a freshening up as things look a bit shabby, such as some of the plaques and descriptions. Some information is not translated to English which was a shame. It would be great either a bit more of a self- guided storytelling with a little more structure to the exhibitions but definitely a great place to visit. The above critique are simply to move it from a high 3/low 4 to a 5.
Worth the visit.

This place is fantastic for several reasons. The first being the fact that it's pretty much identical to how it was originally built by the Swedish Air Force, as a base to house 20 fighter. The second reason is that the museum has an extensive assortment of military and civilian aircraft, as well as military helicopters.
The price of admission is right, there's plenty to look at (even during winter!), and unlike other aviation museums, they allow you to hop in the cockpit of a Draken and Viggen fighter. There is also plenty of child oriented activities that will keep them busy.
The downsides to the museum is that like other reviewers have mentioned, it is off the beaten path from the nearest bus stop, and is treacherous in the winter with icy roads. Someone fell on the ice as I was walking in. Other than that, the gift shop's selection is quite limited in what they have to offer. Really wish there were some books in English on the history of the Swedish Air Force and Saab Aircraft.

Visiting the historical castle "Carlstens fästning" in the beautiful area of Mastrand is an unforgettable experience, especially during the summer holidays. The area is not only a charming traditional residential neighborhood with beautiful houses, but also offers a delightful array of touristy restaurants and shops to explore. The island's natural beauty, along with its cultural richness, make it a great destination for sightseeing, relaxation, boating and fishing. Whether you seek relaxation or adventure, Mastrand provides the ideal setting to enjoy the best of both worlds. I experienced this visit on a calm afternoon in August and enjoyed it. You can park your car in good parking lots in the area and after getting a ticket for adults over six years of age, go to the island with a boat that runs every 15 minutes.

Ive been absolutely in love with castles, forts and the likes since I was a small boy.
This was extremely interesting and informative!
The castle is in very good shape (of course only everything made of Rock, there are multiple floors/parts which were made of wood and sadly didnt live to see this day)
But they talk about that in the "Podcast" through the castle with 28 1-2min parts.
I loved the Story being told, its in multiple languages, including german, which tells you about the forts origin, how much blond and sweat it took to build and what its purpose.
The ticket price was 120 Krona (ca. 11 euro) for regular grownups and 100 (ca. 9) for students, which is completly justified, as you have to keep the fort in check.
Definetly Worte the Trip!
There is also a small place to eat infront of it.

Carlstens Fortress is a famous landmark located on Marstrands island. Due to the limited time (during the break of the conference we participated in Marstrands havshotell), we didn’t have a chance to enter the castle, although the entrance fee is not expensive. But still, I would recommend people to buy tickets and take a views inside.
We took the ferry to the island and walked for around 10 minutes to reach the fortress area. We only walked around the fortress and enjoyed the fantastic view here. You can watch Koön island, harbors and beautiful sea views from the highest point behind the fortress, which were so attractive and gorgeous! It is really a good place. 👍

Beautiful fort, it instills respect in you when you walk around inside it's walls and realise that countless prisoners were worked to death in order to construct the fort.
In one of the pictures there is the gallows where they hung prisoners, the same gallows that Johannes Bramberg fell down from when the rope that he was going to hang from snapped.
Interesting place, glad i never had the ill fortune of being one of it's many prisoners...

If you're moving up or down the coast of Sweden, then you should take your time to visit Marstrand and the fortress. You'll pay 3 Euro for the ferry (both ways) and then you'll have time to walk around the fortress and the little island.
It is totally enough just to see the surrounding area of the fortress and to enjoy the view.
The entrance is too expensive if you are not into castles and these things.
Plan for 3-4 hours to enjoy.
