🇺🇸 What to Eat in Chicago | Cantonese Food Guide
For car-less students exiled in this "frozen tundra," Cantonese cuisine is one of life's few comforts 🥢 This post is dedicated to documenting Cantonese restaurants in the Chicago area—pure, no ads, updated periodically for myself and fellow picky eaters! Tastes vary, so all reviews are based on personal experience. No ranking here—even the same dish at the same restaurant can vary! Feel free to share your thoughts, recommend old or new spots, and contribute your strong opinions on food, ambiance, service, and value 😄 📍 Go 4 Food Tried once—neither impressive nor disappointing. Didn’t leave fully satisfied but willing to give it another shot. 📍 Golden Bull Restaurant Also tried once. 👍 Hand-Shredded Chicken—rare to find chicken in the US with such rich flavor! (Avoid if you dislike strong chicken taste.) 🦪 Steamed Oysters with Black Bean Sauce & 🍤 Garlic Vermicelli Steamed Shrimp were okay, nothing special. 📍 Grand Palace A repeat visit spot! 👍 Five-Spice Duck—generous portion, tasty but can get greasy halfway. 🍵 Herbal Tea is nice, and Steamed Egg Custard is super delicious! ⚠️ Salted Fish with Chicken & Eggplant—very pungent salted fish flavor, not for everyone. Environment may feel dated, but service is decent. 📍 JM Seafood (Wing Yip Chop Suey Restaurant) Tried twice—first time was mind-blowing, especially the Lotus Leaf Sticky Rice with Lobster (dreamed about it later!). Second visit felt less impressive, maybe due to high expectations. Willing to revisit, though it’s a bit far from Chinatown. 📍 Kam Fung Restaurant Open until midnight—perfect for post-CSO concert hunger runs! Very homely vibe, often served by the same auntie who sometimes gives free soup or rice balls. 👍 Recommend leafy greens, Pepper Salt Pork Chops, Frog Legs, and Clay Pot Rice (may need extra salt, but huge portion—great for leftovers!). 👎 Black Pepper Beef Short Ribs & Three Cup Chicken are just average. 📍 Wentworth Seafood House Visited many times—one of my favorites in Chicago! 🍗 Sizzling Chicken Pot is decent, but better to try seafood dishes: 👍 Poached Live Shrimp, Steamed Sea Bass, Steamed Egg Custard with Clams! Service can be lacking, but love the lively, bustling atmosphere—go off-peak if you prefer quieter meals. #ChicagoLife #ChicagoEats #CantoneseFood #ChineseFood #FoodGuide #StudentEats
