Alaska Cruise Journey: Exploring Ketchikan in the Rain
Day 6: A Rainy Day in Ketchikan Welcome to Ketchikan - another charming Alaskan town accessible only by sea or air! Known as the "Salmon Capital of the World" ππ, this place gets rain 229 days a year... and guess what? We arrived on one of those rainy days! β After docking, our first stop was the Visitor Information Center downtown, where we grabbed a local map πΊοΈ and started our walking tour. Despite the drizzle, we enthusiastically trekked 10.8km along recommended paths, weaving through streets and alleys. Our map got soaked π¦, but nothing could dampen our spirits! π Near the end of our walk, we met a friendly local cyclist π΄ who highly recommended the "Silver Line" bus - a local route covering all major attractions for just $5/day! ππ΅ The route splits into Silver North and Silver South, hitting highlights like Totem Park and Creek Street. We hopped on board and enjoyed a scenic 2-hour loop around town (from downtown west β north β east β back south). With 2h45m until departure, I nervously confirmed with the driver about timing β³, while my daughter stayed cool as a cucumber π₯. We didn't stop anywhere, but the views from the window were spectacular: colorful wooden houses π , totem poles peeking through dense forests π², and charming coastal streets. Pro tip: Check the schedule in advance! There's also a seasonal Shuttle Bus (May-Oct) for easy access to main attractions. Must-see spots include: Totem Park π Creek Street (once a red-light district, now souvenir shops! ποΈ) Visit in August/September to witness the incredible salmon run - the whole town smells fishy π, and the streams turn murky with fish and eggs, but it's nature at its most raw and powerful! πͺ Bonus tip: Download the transit app shown in my pics - it works in Vancouver, Ketchikan, AND Ottawa!
