Brera Art Gallery: Whatโs Worth Seeing? ๐จโจ
If, like me, you donโt have much time but still want to enjoy the Brera Art Gallery, here are the must-see masterpieces you absolutely canโt miss: ๐น "The Kiss" by Hayez, 1859 โ the gallery's treasure, located in Room 38. ๐ ๐น "Melancholy" by Hayez, 1840 โ find it in Room 37. ๐ข ๐น "The Wedding of the Virgin" by Raphael, 1504 โ displayed in Room 24. Raphael was a master at learning from the strengths of others. In his later works, you can see how he absorbed influences from Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. This painting is a tribute to his early mentor, Perugino, and marks Raphaelโs first achievement as a young artist surpassing his teacher. ๐ ๐น "The Supper at Emmaus" by Caravaggio, 1606 โ located in Room 28. ๐ฝ๏ธ Among Caravaggioโs two versions of this scene, this one was painted later in his life. After facing many hardships, the saints and Jesus in this work reflect a sense of experience. The strong chiaroscuro creates a dramatic effect, making this my personal favorite version of "The Supper at Emmaus." ๐ ๐น "Portrait of a Young Woman" by Rembrandt โ a small painting thatโs easy to miss! ๐ ๐น "St. Mark Preaching in Alexandria" by Giovanni Bellini, 1474 โ found in Room 8. This is the largest painting in the Brera collection. If you look closely, the background resembles St. Mark's Square in Venice, as the painter never visited Egypt, so he imagined it instead! ๐ ๐น "The Lamentation of Christ" by Mantegna, 1474 โ displayed in Room 6. This painting is also a very famous work from the Renaissance, showcasing Mantegna's application of perspective. ๐ผ๏ธ ๐น "The Woman Selling Fruit" by Vincenzo, 1580 โ I really love this one! Itโs filled with an abundance of fruits and vegetables, giving a sense of richness. Next to this painting are three still lifes by Vincenzo showcasing game, fish, and kitchen ingredients, reflecting the food culture of 16th-century Italy! ๐๐๐ ๐น "The Last Supper" by Rubens, 1631 โ a rare vertical composition of this iconic scene. โ๏ธ #ArtHistory #DailyMasterpieceShare
