Chicago’s Trendy Filipino Bakery — Del Sur 🍍

Since Kasama took off, Chicago’s Filipino food scene has been booming — spots like A Taste of the Philippines, Umaga, Boonie’s, Kanin, and pop-up Tita Tootsies have joined the wave. The latest hit? Del Sur, open just a month. Like Kasama, it blends Filipino and American flavors, but focuses only on pastries and drinks with no dine-in seating. It’s already wildly popular — lines are long, and they limit one of each pastry per person. I arrived around 11 AM and waited almost an hour. Some items were already sold out, so I tried what was left. 🍍 Piña Colada Muffin – Tastes just like the drink! Moist, with coconut and pineapple flavors that crumble delicately. 🍄 Mushroom Hand Pie – Savory, cheesy, and fragrant — a solid choice. 🧀 Seasonal Focaccia (Giardiniera + Cheese) – A bit too hard, maybe needed reheating. Not my favorite. 🍌 Turon Danish – Incredibly crispy, with caramelized banana, vanilla custard, and buttery layers — a flavor bomb. 🍚 Toasted Rice Croissant – Perfect lamination, though the toasted rice flavor was subtle — more like an excellent plain croissant. 🌿 Pandan Basque Cake – Denser than typical Basque cheesecake, closer to pound cake. Strong pandan aroma topped with strawberry-rhubarb jam. 🍠 Ube Cream Pie – Rich ube flavor, soft and moist. 🍵 Ube Matcha Latte – One of the best I’ve had — real ube and matcha, no artificial taste. Just wish it came less icy. Delicious but sweeter than Kasama. While waiting, I overheard a guy ask “What’s pandan? What’s ube?” 😑 Maybe that’s why the line moves slow… (I wanted to kindly educate him — with force 😂). 📍 Del Sur 4639 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60625 #DelSur #FilipinoBakery #ChicagoEats #PastryHeaven #UbeEverything #PandanLove #LongLines
