Chicago Pop-Up Dinner Series — SuperHai 🍲
This time it was a collaboration pop-up between SuperHai and Mamamadee — both of which I’ve tried and reviewed before, so I went in eyes closed 🐛. The event offered two set menus, plus one Suntory beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) included. 🥢 Chinese Lunch Set: ▪️ Century egg and pork congee — really tasty, especially with Mamamadee’s homemade chili oil 🌶️. ▪️ Char siu rice — honestly, not great. Too heavy on oyster sauce, not enough glaze, and dry. You could find better (and cheaper) versions in Chinatown. ▪️ Osmanthus and goji berry jelly — light and pleasant. 🍱 Japanese Breakfast Set: ▪️ Matsutake mushroom soup — aromatic and warming. ▪️ Pan-seared miso cod — tender and well-seasoned. ▪️ Ginger salad with pickled cucumber and daikon — fresh and tangy. ▪️ Dessert: Mitarashi dango — classic and satisfying. This set was safe and tasty, though not quite at the level of TenGoku Aburiya or Yume. Overall, the experience felt a bit overpriced for what we got. I’ll think twice before jumping into their next collaboration. But if you’re curious — their next event is on July 18th.
