used to come here all the time as it is super convenient from work, but since the new ownership my visits have steadily decreased. Value for money spent has declined for sure, but the biggest change I have noticed is in the customer service. The people working there don't treat their patrons very well, and the experience I just had is going to make me stop going there for good. I walked in to get a coffee, and the place was empty except for two employees standing at the counter. Neither acknowledged me at all, and both turned and walked away from the counter (one to the bathroom, the other into the back). I stood waiting for a minute wondering if anyone was going to come and take my order when one of the employees came back, stood in front of me and just stared at me. I said hello , good morning and again they just stared at me. So, i placed my order and again they didn't say a word to me, just punched in the amount into the till and hit the prompt for a tip. I was paying with a giftcard so I cancelled the transaction as the employee went on to continue making my coffee for me. When they came back I indicated I would be using a giftcard to pay. They still said nothing, punched in the transaction and then reached to my wallet to take the giftcard. Super weird. In the meantime another patron had come in and this employee went on to serve him as I was leaving. They had no issue speaking to him and engaged in chit chat, so it left me wondering what was the issue with me, or had I done anything to offend this person by saying good morning? I just left incredibly confused. I will not be back and will be passing my giftcard on to...
Read moreStopped by around 330 pm on our ride, we were the only customers. We really wanted to like this place as it is very convenient to our bike route. First thing we noticed was the amount of food on the floor around our table and around other tables. The Nanaimo bar was 1/2 the size we have been served elsewhere but it tasted fine. We ordered tea and the barista said he would bring it to our table. We waited about 15 minutes and in the meantime I went to the washroom. Ugh so dirty, the ledge around the base tile was so awful, toilet disgusting. Came back to the table, still no tea. Meanwhile barista was sitting at a table looking at his phone. I went over and asked about our tea and he jumped up and said he was letting it steep. Warned about how hot it was and proceeded to bring it to the counter with his fingers around the rim. He offered ice and brought it in a scoop and was going to use his fingers to put it in our cups. I quickly put the ice in myself and he put lids on with his fingers all over the lid where we would drink. I would love to recommend this cute place to our many friends who ride the trail but will not do so because of the unclean state. Too bad because the barista could have been sweeping up a bit instead of looking...
Read moreAfter 6 or 7 visits I've decided to write a review, I will admit my expectations for proper cafe is not representative of the North American coffee culture; tall, weak, full of sugar. The staff as always have been friendly and welcoming, the shop and restrooms clean. With the exception of one visit the coffee is disappointing but has so much potential. I order espresso or cortado; the espresso is always too long bordering on americano with no creme. The cortado usually made as a macchiato, which I will give the benefit for not being a common drink in North America. One visit the gentleman working knew exactly what a cortado was, kept the 1:1 ratio perfect, and did not over draw the espresso shot resulting in a cafe worthy of Europe. He knew the history of cafe and his passion showed. We had an excellent conversation as I enjoyed the beverage and resumed my day. I recommend reviewing your bean grind settings, reducing your extraction times, and calibrating frequently; you have an excellent product that deserves the attention to detail....
