Today my Bakery tour of New Zealand started in Arrowtown at the very well known and respected Arrowtown Bakery & Café. I went with the Steak Bacon & Cheese and a sausage roll. (snuck in a cinnamon scroll too but don't tell the wife.) The pie was very good. Pastry held the whole lot together well and the filling was excellent. Real slices of bacon and real tasty cheese. One of the better bacon and cheese pies I have had lately. 8/10 The sausage roll was a little spicy. I don't mind spicy so it was OK. It was a little dry and I suspect that it may have been left over from yesterday. Some tomato sauce would have helped it. Overall though, acceptable. 6.5/10. I remembered to bring my scales with me and this is the second time I have weighed a pie. It looks like 220 odd grams is a standard for pies and 170 odd grams for sausage rolls. Arrowtown is a beautiful historic town close to Queenstown and well worth the visit if you are ever in this part of New Zealand. The sparrows are quite fat and arrived within seconds of me sitting in the park. They know what they are doing. PS. The cinnamon scroll was pretty good too. Edit: Forgot to mention, the pie was $NZ6.80 which represented...
Read moreVisited NZ back in October '22 and every day for the last six months I've craved their VENISON PIE. We were in Queenstown for a week, but made every excuse possible to go to Arrowtown to grab this pie. Now I need to find an excuse to go back to NZ, may need to move there or something. It's THAT good. They manage to find perfect harmony between venison, gravy, pastry, and seasonings to make a pie that should easily earn them at least one MICHELIN STAR. If you're planning a trip to NZ, it if you're a local and have never tried the venison pie, go ASAP and thank me later. Their coffee is pretty good too, so have one with the pie. They have lots of pastries and tasty sweet treats for everyone else. Try the pie. You won't soon forget it! P.S. I never managed to snag a photo of a pie because I just wanted to eat it. So I've attached a photo of the adorable little birds that came by...
Read moreWaited in line outside so that was a sign that it was a favorite place. Also, inside the store is small. They opened a second cashier to move us through. Good choice mate. I had questions and they were friendly when answering them. They even asked me questions so it was a pleasant dialogue. They don’t have gluten free pastries, but are willing to switch some menu items to a GF bun if requested. I choose to take a gluten pill and try the sandwich recommended to me on the original bread to get the true NZ experience. They recommended the Whitebait Buttie which is a small fish and egg sandwich. It was pretty simple and not bad. Tasted more egg than anything else. Glad I tried it but wouldn’t recommend. They have other more interesting flavors. My hubby got the Butter Chicken pie and it had a rich curry flavor with just a little heat. Wish I could go back and try some other...
