Harry in the front bar was a wealth of knowledge. And for a younger person than I he seemed fairly well up to date with the history of previous bar flies. We ordered from the meal and drink special list which was unbelievable value and fantastic taste. Also the staff and another manager I spoke with in the gaming room were very polite and friendly. All in all was a great mid week lunch with mum. Keep up the good work
Third time we've eaten in this venue. Can I say great pub grub again. Amazing value. I had bangers and mum and my out of state guest had fish and chips. Really good value and great flavour on all the meals. Drink prices were fairly average across the board ( we has bottled beer, wine by the glass and spirits by the glass) . Tbe service was woeful. As previously experienced in other visits, staff were great! This time Anthony and the Spanish sounding girl (unable to pronounce her name and she had no name badge on) were really bad! In the gaming room Anthony saw me from the restaurant door after the restaurant hsd finished service, and yet waited for the young girl to come from the floor to serve me. The mature man was great. He was also there the previous time I'd visited. Having downloaded the pub+ app in Melbourne, made me think rex hotel had possibly adopted national standards. Clearly they've gone back to bikey hotel standards. Young girl in the gaming lounge when we arrived at 430pm with tats was also great service I mite add. Other than the great food, Id advise people to stick to the Hurley group of hotels, both arms of the Hurley families hotels are always great service and great food. Very disappointing seeing the first 2 visits we had to tbe Rex hotel were good. The coopers bottle I drank at 4:30 pm sat empty by the rear entrance until we left at 10 pm. A place to avoid with elderly...
Read moreThe hotel was pleasant, clean, and easy to get to. The location is close to many destinations in and around Adelaide, including the airport and a reasonable shopping centre with cafes and major retailers within a 1.5km walk. There was plenty of parking in good sized spaces.I booked a basic, single room and got exactly what I expected. It was basic but clean and had a fridge, kettle, and single bed. There was a small armchair but no table although the kettle/fridge cupboard had a pull out tray which I could have used but this was a little dirty so I just sat on the bed to eat. They have a bistro which looked good (25% discount for house guests with dine in or delivery to your room) and offered regular pub menu options but I ended up walking a couple hundred metres down the road to the local takeaway shops for some Thai takeaway. The only complaints I really have are regarding noise, that the walls are quite thin and you could hear the other rooms' doors closing very loudly as people came and went. The next door neighbour listened to their TV at full volume until about 1:30am (I was due for a 6am start and this didn't help!).... Not the hotel's fault, just them being a selfish douchebag. The bar fridge rattled away fairly constantly but I just turned it off until the morning. The worst problem were the pillows though. They were like bricks; thin and extremely hard. I ended up putting the decorative cushion inside a pillow case and using that just to be able to have some padding.I drove only a few minutes around the corner to the famous Cafe de Villi's for breakfast before continuing on my way.All said and done, I would stay here again as it is very budget friendly yet so close to everything. But I will bring my own pillow.... and earplugs...
Read moreWe have enjoyed many homely meals at the Rex Hotel over many years and tonight was our first time since the renovation. I have just had my 80th birthday and have experienced years of national and international dining at many levels. I can truly say that I have never experienced a more disgraceful standard of food and service anywhere, than I had the misfortune to be subjected to this evening. The dining room manager was the rudest person I have ever experienced. The food was vile. The roast of beef was grey and tough, the fish had been incinerated and served with chips but the accompanying salad did not appear but the wilted similarity had to be requested. My 12 scallops at $32 were grotesque, lukewarm, miserable things draped in endive, ginger and a few bits of dead bacon. It was difficult to decide which was worse. Was it the disgraceful food, the service of the well meaning but sadly inept waiter who was unable to perform the simplest of tasks and complained about the inability to hold three plates. As for bar service, it was useless. Ice buckets were not provided for white wine and there was no table service. Promptly at 8.20pm we were told we had 10 minutes to leave, although we were still finishing our wine. When I queried the camp commandant I was told the kitchen closed at 8pm and we were no longer welcome. I have never been so appalled or disgusted by any food outlet I have attended in this state. We live in the Eastern suburbs and due to the car race road closures, we chose to drive west to eat with friends on that side of town. It took us 90 minutes to take the trip to experience the worst meal and service of our lives. We will not be back and we recommend you boycott this disgraceful...
