review no. 42 and 43 for 2024
On recommendation by nice pickles I went on down to The Village Baker at Black Forest. They have 2 outlets the other is at Burnside Village in S.A.
Duck & Mushroom pie $6.50
Got the Duck & Mushroom pie. The pie looked pretty good from the beginning. It had a nice golden top, wasn't too flakey, and had a nice soft texture to the pastry, which was cooked well, the underside was also perfectly cooked. Biting into the pie had that classic duck flavour, it wasn't too rich, the mushrooms balanced it out well. The meat to gravy ratio was spot on. The duck to mushroom ratio was spot on, about the right amount of meat you'd like in a pie. I feel the gravy took away some of the richness that such a type meat can sometimes have. The pie held up perfectly and the serving temp was spot on 👌
Lamb Shank pie $6.60
The presentation of the pie looked really good, a nice touch with the rosemary. Had that nice golden look on the lid, the pastry was slightly flakey on this one. It had a soft but, slight crunch to it. The pastry was perfectly cooked on top and underside. Biting into the pie the lamb was tender and soft, meat cooked perfectly, the sauce/gravy had a nice sort of casserole taste, tomato, onion and pepper. The flavours worked really well together. The pie held up together fine and serving temp was spot on. Both of these pies were delicious if I had to pick one I'd recommend the Lamb Shank pie.

Read moreWhile driving past The Village Baker, I decided to stop in and give it a try—and I’m so glad I did. This place turned out to be an absolute gem. From the moment I stepped in, I was impressed with the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The setup is inviting, with a clean, spacious layout and a comfortable sitting area that’s perfect for relaxing and enjoying a bite.
I ordered the butter chicken pie, and I have to say, it was easily one of the best I’ve had in Adelaide. The pastry was perfectly flaky and golden, and the filling was rich, creamy, and packed with flavour. It had just the right balance of spices and a generous portion of tender chicken. It’s clear that a lot of care and quality ingredients go into their food.
Beyond just the pie, I noticed a great variety of food options on display, from freshly baked breads to sweet treats and savoury pastries—all looking top-notch in terms of quality and presentation. The staff were friendly and helpful too, adding to the positive experience.
Overall, The Village Bakery really surprised me in the best way. It’s definitely a spot I’ll be returning to and recommending to others who appreciate high-quality bakery food in a...
Read moreWhenever my partner and I are out and about we always seek out the local bakery when we get hungry. So over the last few years we have been to many different bakeries in and around Adelaide, country South Australia (including the Yankalilla Bakery) and also in regional Victoria (including the famous Beechworth Bakery) and in NSW around the Blue Mountains. And we can definitely say that the The Village Baker at Black Forest is our favourite bakery out of them all. They have the most perfect pastry and the most scrumptious fillings in their pies. Our favourites are their Lamb Shank pies, their Chicken and Mushroom and Steak and Mushroom pies, and their Pork and Fennel sausage rolls. Every pie, pasty and sausage roll that we have had from them has tasted fantastic. They are the best pie makers that we have found during our travels, even better than Yankalilla and the Beechworth bakeries. Don't get me wrong - Yankalilla and the Beechworth are both excellent bakeries - but The Village Baker is...
