A Hidden Gem in Berrima: Taylor’s Crown Inn – Where History Meets Hospitality
Ever been on a road trip, winding through the countryside, when you suddenly stumble upon a place so rich in history and charm that you feel like you've stepped into a different era? That’s exactly the magic we found in Berrima, a quaint village tucked away in the heart of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. But this wasn’t just another pretty stop—this was Taylor’s Crown Inn, one of the oldest pubs in Australia, and let me tell you, the stories its walls could tell would make your head spin!
A Pub Built by Convicts – Yes, You Read That Right!
Picture this: a pub hand-built by convicts. That’s Taylor’s Crown Inn for you! It mirrors the iconic Harper’s Mansion, a National Trust treasure perched atop Berrima village. But here’s where things get even juicier—this wasn’t just a lively watering hole. Oh no, this historic site doubled as a boarding house upstairs and concealed three eerie jail cells beneath its floors.
Back in the 1800s, convicts passing through on the Old Hume Highway would sometimes find themselves spending the night behind bars—literally. If they arrived too late to be hauled off to Berrima Gaol, they were “checked in” downstairs whether they liked it or not. Can you imagine sipping on a glass of red where prisoners once awaited their fate? Now that’s a pub with a past!
A Place That Whispers History
This iconic establishment was one of thirteen original inns in Berrima, dating all the way back to 1844. Fast forward nearly two centuries, and its spirit has been beautifully resurrected as Citizen Kanebridge Lodge, keeping its legacy alive with Taylor’s Inn Wine Bar, tucked just beyond an enchanting rose garden. It’s the ultimate blend of old-world charm and modern hospitality—where the past lingers in the air, yet comfort and warmth welcome you in.
Crackling Fires, Fine Drinks & A Tunnel of Secrets…
But wait, there’s more! This place has seen it all—soldiers and prison guards once gathered here after long shifts, indulging in beer, wine, and hearty meals before dozing off in front of what is now one of the largest fireplaces in the Southern Highlands. That fireplace? It sits inside a blacksmith’s building attached to the inn, radiating warmth and history in equal measure.
And here’s where things take a thrilling turn. Rumour has it, a hidden tunnel once linked the Berrima Vault House to the gaol, a secret passage for smuggling contraband… and perhaps the odd clandestine visitor under the cover of darkness. A little scandal, a little mystery—just the kind of history we love unearthing!

Read moreWe chose to do a recovery brunch here the day after our wedding and what a disappointment. Firstly of all the staff, only one was kind. The rest were so rude, swearing and giving very passive aggressive answers. We had an accident there with our dog and were very apologetic about it and offered to help but my friends said that after we walked away, the guy was swearing, throwing things around and made it super uncomfortable. We also paid a $350 fee for a large booking fee for honestly nothing. The place was empty, the service was absolutely horrible. We had a person wait 45 minutes for a bacon and egg roll after chasing it multiple times to answered in a rude tone 'its coming!!' noting there was barely anyone else there. What a terrible way to end our wedding weekend. Also note that their email post brunch was to write a review on google if its was a good experience but only to email feedback if it wasn't. I originally emailed the manager privately to never get a response. Waste of money, waste of time. Never again. I would never recommend this place and will warn future brides on Facebook groups to not go here.
Since I cannot respond to your feedback. Let me come back to you here below. No one offered me or my husband the lodge space. Not sure who you spoke to then. We asked first to sit at the rose garden as the vinery did not look anything like the photos online and your team said all good and we made sure we left on time for your high tea afterwards.
Understand you pressured us to pre order food but we rejected this as we werent sure how many would turn up, only about 20 people turned up, surely you had the staff to cater to 20 people that all ordered at different times as they all turned up at different times. But the one occasion waited 45 minutes and everyone else who ordered after him, got their food and drinks first.
Yes - totally understand hence why I offered instantly to clean it up myself. I am not dumb to this. No one would like this and I didn't want your staff to go through it. I would have rather me cleaning it than have your staff swear about around my friends. I would also hope you clean those cushions on a regular for normal hygiene reasons.
Don't worry about Facebook, its a wedding group with thousands of brides, where people seek advice.
No need to email you, i did previously and never got a response. So why bother.
Your response tells me its a venue that does not take any accountability. So thank you for making that...
