This place was recommended on our community page. We decided to give it a try. We ordered; short soup, steamed dim sims, curry puffs, salt and pepper lamb, special fried rice, curry chicken, fried ice cream, Chinese tea. Every single bite, was amazing. I don’t even like fried ice cream but the food was all so good, that I ordered it, and was not disappointed. The dumplings in the short soup were divine and then I tried the steamed dim sims and they were even better. The service was lovely and fast. The restaurant seating area was quiet and cosy. I was suprised at the bill when we were leaving, was not as much as I had thought it would be. I noticed another couple and the interactions they had with the man serving us (manager?) he mentioned he hadn’t seen them in a while and they said it had been a year and he still remembers them. That to me is wonderful service. I like the feel of the place too, it doesn’t have the pretentious brand new look that draws people in and then find the food is disappointing. This place is old, there’s storage stuff everywhere and I love that. It gives an authentic there’s good food here so don’t mind the surroundings. This will definitely be a new favourite for us. Oh and driving home I was like I feel great. You know how you kind of expect to feel a little sick after such a huge take out meal. We didn’t feel that at all....

We have been twice now, once for lunch and another time for dinner. The service is personal and the meals both times were delicious. We had a party of 10 and everyone was full and enjoyed it immensely. Will definitely be back.

For those after takeaway, they did a roaring trade while we were there, clearly a popular choice.

UPDATE - 12/10/2024 - have been many times since the above post (from 2021), just as great - food is awesome, as confirmed by 'newbies'' we have met there for dinner. Service I feel is personalised. A very good memory for regulars BUT our experience has been awesome since the first day. The vegies even are clearly fresh, from markets or similar - very fresh and flavoursome. If a price shows up for me as $50+ It was for a large banquet option plus drinks, so not a meal and drink etc.

If you have ever driven the east coast and stayed in townships where there is a chinese restaurant people always go to - this is the equivalent in Brissy. The dining is relaxed, don't expect modern decor etc... it is JUST like the restaurants many remember from childhood, including the competition over spinning the lazy suzane your way for remaining dish bits. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed. Will aim to get pics next time before...

Delicious food with fresh ingredients and plentiful servings.

Stopped in on my way home from work and ordered cashew chicken and vegetable fried rice (not on the menu but they were happy to make me one).

The chicken dish was delicious, tasted very fresh and was packed with both chicken and a good variety of fresh veggies. The rice was also delicious and packed with veggies.

I got 3 decent servings our of what I ordered so value was great imo.

This place has been around for decades and I used to frequent it back in the day. I'm lazier now so tend to opt for delivery (which they don't offer) so it fell off my radar, but I think I might make the effort more often. Only drawback for a lazy orderer like me is indeed the lack of delivery options as they aren't on the apps, but they were very busy with takeaway orders when I dropped in early Friday evening so it clearly isn't hurting them.

Food...

Always wanted to try this place as it is close to our new house, finally got the chance today and certainly not disappoint. Good stir fry technique which we call 'wok-hei' (wok-air) in Cantonese, not every Chinese restaurant can do it and it's a gem when you find one. The Singapore noodles and Chow Mein was good, stir fry beef hor fun and fried rice not dry enough but better than most places already. Would highly recommend if you want an authentic Chinese food experience.

We ordered the curry puff, fried rice and lemon chicken and the food was delicious! I went to the restaurante because of the good comments that I read. The BIG ISSUE was waiting ONE HOUR to get the food. Price and food are good but just go if you don’t bother waiting a long time to get the food on your table.

Over the decades, Ho Choi has proven to be a good old-style reliable Chinese restaurant. In fact, it's become something of a suburban Moorooka institution since being established in 1966. The reasonably priced food is always delicious and the service is obligingly friendly.
