I first visited this restaurant just over 12 months ago and was very happy with the food and service on that visit, despite the poor decor. We have since eaten there several times but our visit last month was pretty ordinary. Unfortunately, last night's visit was the pits!
Early in the evening a rat ran through the dining room and customers cleverly wrangled it and chased it out the front door whilst staff stood around and looked helpless. In and of itself this would not necessarily have been a deal breaker for us but the food and service last night were second rate.
Our Peking duck was not as tasty as usual, light on the fillings on the pancakes and tasteless in the san choy bow. The roe-on scallops tasted watery and we didn't even finish them - even though we had several seafood lovers in our group. The golden prawns (dipped in egg and deep-fried) tasted floury and unappetising. The salt and pepper whitebait was pretty ordinary but the bean curd and mushroom hotpot was pretty good.
Service was dreadful all night. Each time we ordered drinks we had to ask for one more because they had miscounted. As per our last visit, they forgot our stir-fried mixed vegetable dish. When reminded about it they sent out a dish that contained only one kind of green vegetable! When we had finished eating all the waiters avoided our table like the plague whilst they hurried around cleaning the empty tables. At around 9pm we were ready to order dessert but it took until 9.15pm before we could get someone's attention and order some toffee bananas. Someone reluctantly agreed to cook them for us despite all the staff sitting in the dining room by this time waiting for us to leave, then the waiter came and asked us to pay the bill before we got our dessert so that she could close off the register...I couldn't believe it. The bill was completely illegible, including numbers, and I had to ask her to come and explain it to me. Staff stacked their bags on the next table to remind us that they were ready to go home.
I have recommended this restaurant in the past but no more. We will...
Read moreWe absolutely love Yum Yum for their roast duck and classic Chinese dishes. We've been coming here for awhile now, and have been meaning to write a review so have saved up quite a few photos from our visits here. We always get their half roasted duck - it's a huge serving size and can easily feed 2-4 people. Some of our other go-tos (highly recommend!) include: salt and pepper quail, pork ribs in Peking sauce, shredded beef in Peking sauce, stir-fried seasonal veggies in garlic, fried sole fish, and the deep fried ice cream. We've also ordered take-away duck and pork ribs (pictured here also), the servings were so generous.
We love coming here with a bottle of vino for a cosy and intimate dinner with quality Chinese food and roast duck. We've never been disappointed with the quality or service 😊
But what I really love about this mom-and-pop style restaurant is the thoughtful service. We once ordered pork ribs in peking sauce to take-away over the phone and was running a bit late to pick it up, so the owner made sure the kitchen only cooked it when we were closer on arrival to keep the dish as fresh as possible. She insisted that it will taste better this way, which I really appreciated. You can tell they care about their food and customers.
Thanks Yum Yum team for your dedication and hard work, will keep bringing friends and...
Read moreWe tried the Peking duck 2 course because of the good reviews but it wasn’t good. Because we opted to have the pancakes with duck skin and the duck chopped up to take home. There was not much cucumber and spring onion with duck pancake. But what made it no good was I don’t believe we received the duck exactly. When I went to make dinner using my takeaway duck there were 4 duck legs and various pieces of duck bones with not much meat on them. I believe they didn’t give us the duck breast and kept that for themselves to make other dishes. If it wasn’t for the deceit, I would’ve gave more stars. I can see that I have been ripped off but too late to do anything about it because I opted to take away the duck. It would have been better if they gave me the duck in front of me so we could eat it at the restaurant but apparently that was not an option so all the more reason that believe I did not receive the duck as a whole. You can’t fool me. I won’t come back to this place because of this dishonesty. If the owner tries to rebutt this review then explain how a duck has 4 legs and no breast. Also it costed $95 for this totally disappointing dinner so quite expensive...
