The Fat Goanna — Restaurant in District of Majura

Been to this cafe a few times before to meet colleagues over a coffee. The last few times we met there at 11.30am, no problems. On our most recent visit, I got there a bit earlier than the others so went ahead & ordered my coffee. The guy tells me I need to have it takeaway or go outside as it’s lunch time, their busy time. Most tables inside & out were available at this point so I was very surprised & thought he was kidding. Apparently not. I pointed out that I was a paying customer & that I was meeting others as well who will be paying customers. He just repeated that it’s their busy period & asked for my order again (which turned out to be the wrong size but whatever). I went ahead & sat at one of several available tables. Couldn’t exactly go anywhere else at that point as I’d prearranged to meet there. When the waitress brought my coffee, she too said it’s their busy time and I’d have to vacate the table! I advised her that her colleague had already mentioned this (felt like badgering at this point) & that we’ll go somewhere else in future. As she walked away, she muttered something like ‘we won’t serve you’! How rude. We finished our meeting at 12 and, lo and behold, there were still plenty of tables available even though it was their ‘busy period’! Look, I get that cafes have gone through hard times & still struggle now but to unnecessarily ostracise customers when it wasn’t actually busy at the time we were there makes no business sense whatsoever. See another similar comment here & the owner’s response clearly stating their unreasonable position that if you don’t order food, you’re not welcome to sit down! I do not...

Incredibly rude staff. We were commanded to leave because we weren’t getting food after ordering drinks, even though the place was not even half full. Lady had a go at us that we’d been told before about the table service, even though it was the first time we’d been here. The glass was dirty with grime on the side!

Also a complete lack of vegan options. Not even a vegan option on any of the vegetarian dishes. Shocking!

In response to the owners response: Vegan is not the same as vegetarian. We did ask about the vegan options after sitting down, not after we were leaving. I was waiting for a friend to join me for lunch, the wait staff told me to move my pram because of the robot. No issues. I moved it behind my table. This wasn’t good enough and the wait staff asked me to move up the back of the cafe 3 times. I declined, as I was happy in my chosen seat (only 3 tables from the back). I thought this request was such a strange interaction with a customer, so I left without purchasing anything.
