Another hotpot restaurant in Perth's pseudo-ChinaTown that is Victoria Park. Located on the edge of the restaurant strip, parking wasn't too hard on a Friday evening.
I suggest getting there early. Queues start forming from 6pm. However they have a hustling takeaway service with the bowls well sealed and packaged.
Pick a steel bowl and fill it with your choice of hotpot ingredients. This is weighed with a minimum 400g. Then choose your choice of soup base. Tomato: Very tomato flavoured, no spice. Mildly greasy. Kid friendly? Pork Bone: Our favourite. No spice. A light tonkotsu style broth. Stir-fry. Schezuan peppers and very greasy. I do NOT recommend.
We did not try the spicier soup bases. YMMV
Ingredients are then cooked in the back kitchen with your choice of soup base, placed in a generous bowl. Rice is complimentary but you have to ask for it.
The usual greens, fish balls, money bags, fresh chicken, duck blood, black fungus, mushrooms and rolled meats. Nothing fancy but a reasonably comprehensive selection. Along with choice of home made, konjac, glass, sweet potato, udon, two minute style noodles.
Sold by weight, be warned that if you are generous on noodles or vegetables, it is easy to go over 400g. It isn't unusual to pay $25+ for your generous bowl of soup + choice of condiments. There are no significant inclusions in the broth (unlike some other hotpot restaurants where the soup base already has meat/vegetables thrown in).
Everything is self-serve. Napkins and chopsticks in a drawer by the table. Apart from the pork bone broth, I'm not sure I can be bothered trying the others. YMMV.
Expensive but a reasonable feed. You're best to not overload your bowl and save room for the plethora of dessert places along the...
Read moreI've been to this restaurant three times during the dinner rush, and it seems like there's always a wait of at least 10-20 minutes. However, considering how busy the place gets, I understand the wait. The staff members are nice and polite when they take your name down in line for a table.
The food selection and choices are impressive, and I highly recommend trying their signature spicy soup (spicy level 2), especially if you enjoy a medium level of spiciness. However, I would caution against this hotpot if you're not a fan of Sichuan peppers. The hotpot pairs well with rice, and it's worth mentioning that they offer free refills of rice bowls.
The restaurant has a nice aesthetic, and the music sets a good atmosphere. Overall, it was a decent experience, and the food definitely makes up for the wait. However, I do have one small complaint regarding the sesame paste. During my first visit, it was thick and flavourful, as it should be. But on subsequent visits, it was replaced with a watered-down blend that lacked both flavour and appetising appearance. When I inquired about it, the staff mentioned that they just kept adding water to it.
I must also mention that while I haven't explored many side dishes, I did try the fried crispy pork belly. Regrettably, it wasn't as crispy as expected; instead, it had a hard texture resembling jerky. The seasoning seemed to consist mainly of chili powder, which could easily be obtained from the condiments station.
Despite these minor issues, I still recommend the food and find the service to be satisfactory. However, if you have a fondness for sesame paste in your hot pot dipping sauce, I highly recommend bringing your own jar to ensure a delightful...
Read moreIt was a Saturday night, and the place was packed. Before you sit in the waiting room, remember to leave your name. There is a waiting area indoors. When we arrived, three groups of people were ahead of us. We had to wait around 30 minutes before being seated. The food selection was pretty extensive, with a wide range to choose from. The cost per 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝐠 𝐢𝐬 $𝟒.𝟐𝟖. 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝟒𝟎𝟎𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐦 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝟖𝟎𝟎𝐠. We selected greens, frozen prawns, slices of fish, frozen slices of pork and beef, luncheon meat, quail eggs, seafood tofu, cheese tofu, and slices of lotus root weighing 1.125kg. Dinner for two people was $𝟒𝟖.𝟏𝟓. We settled on medium spicy, but the clerk cautioned us that it would be pretty intense if we don't like spicy food. As a result, we select for the less spicy choice. I also requested that there be less oil and salt. Rice is also available on request. Items that I 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 enjoy: The 𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭 has a mushy texture. It is not crispy or crunchy. Furthermore, the 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭, with no texture. Finally, the price is on the high side. It is not spicy in flavour, but it has a numbing effect. I'd still return to try their soup version. There’s male and female...
