Custard Canteen — Restaurant in Gold Coast City

I made a great find whilst strolling around Tallebudgera. I see some bright red and white umbrellas and outdoor tables and head towards the hole in the wall kiosk, only to discover it’s a sibling to Bam Bam and Cubby Bakehouse and I’m very excited for the treats they’ll have.

It’s a lovely spot in a garden setting, shaded by the umbrellas and trees and perfect to bring your pram or dogs. Food is all Served in takeaway boxes and coffee in takeaway cups, but it is all brought to your table.

The counter box showcases the pastry offerings, and I ordered their version of a Portuguese tart / almond tart rolled into one. The use of puff pastry with an almond frangipane cream folded through is stellar. Straight out of the oven too, this is perfect. It’s Easter, so their creme egg cookie special is also opted for. The creamy centre makes for a delicious treat.

There’s an all day menu, and we order the scrambled eggs, with some add ons; tomato, relish and hash browns. We think the prices here are pretty reasonable too.

Coffee wise, it’s top notch, using Firebird by Marvell St, Byron Bay.

If I had to sum up Custard Canteen I'd say it's simple things done exceptionally well.

It's a busy spot, parking will be tough to find on a nice day with the people enjoying the beach , I recommend walking around the point from Burleigh, which is a nice way to arrive and to walk off the fantastic food when you're done.

I had the eggs my way (fried) with bacon and mushrooms and my wife had the eggs benedict both of which were expertly cooked with quality ingredients (bread and mushrooms were both brilliant) and reasonably priced. My wife's mentioned that her eggs benny were the best she'd had on the Gold Coast.

Coffee was exceptional - perfectly roasted with no bitterness and a slight hazelnut flavour profile but not sweet - could be my favourite cup of coffee for a number of years.

We shared a strawberry milkshake too which again was exceptional - no store bought syrup here, it tasted exactly like a mouth full of ripe strawberries, absolutely delicious.

Staff were extremely friendly and seemed to be having a great time in the kitchen and at the counter.
