Today (08/04/23) we went to Rusty Rails Cafe for breakfast for my Mum’s birthday. We arrived around 830am and placed our orders. There were 6 of us attending. We all got a meal and a couple of us ordered tea and coffee. The first of our coffees came out at 925am with no apology for the nearly hour wait. I was met with this had to be in a take away cup because we have no mugs left. The meals then came out from 930-940am. They were cold on arrival and no apology for the hour wait. My sister still hadn’t received her coffee at this time and had to ask where it was. The staff member said ‘oh is that yours? We called that out ages ago.’ She bought the luke wam coffee over and again no apology for that. The coffee did not taste nice. After finishing our meals, my sister also still not received the cake she had ordered. Her partner went up and asked for it. The supervisor came out and asked how long we’d been waiting, we said for over an hour, nearly hour and a half. This was met by oh well you know we had over 300 people for the train. Again no apology.

As locals, we won’t return again, to be made to feel that we obviously weren’t as important as the train passengers literally left a bad taste in our mouths. Staff were low energy, unsympathetic and unapologetic.

Really unhappy and not a nice birthday...

The 2 stars were for the food.. it was good However that’s unfortunately where the good ends. I had enquired about a booking about a week before we went. A few days later I rang to confirm the booking because nobody rang me as they said they would be in contact to confirm the booking. As I rang they said the booking wasn’t in the system. So I made another booking on the phone for 8 people. It was confirmed. When we arrived.. we were greeted to a young man who was very rude. We said we had a booking and he confirmed my name on the booking. He very rudely said “i haven’t set your table I’m the only one working at this cafe today I don’t have time” there was a lady next to him behind the counter and multiple people in the kitchen. So a lie. He then goes to me “well pick a table and hopefully we can accommodate you” there was barely anyone in the cafe. We ordered our drinks and the wrong one arrived and the lady was very confused as we said it wasn’t ours. Very unprofessional of her to say “sorry I’ve never worked here before. Once our food arrived 6 out of 8 meals were all mixed up and we ended sorting our own dishes out on the table. The food was good but unfortunately the staff were very unorganised and let...

Whilst visiting family in Gympie from Newcastle, NSW, My two boys and I attended the Rusty Rails Cafe on numerous occassions from January 12 to 22, 2021. During several visits, we ordered the eggs benny, blueberry muffins, scones and iced lattes. My eggs were always cooked perfectly and the muffins were fresh - fluffy and warm. The iced lattes were icy cold with a smooth, strong coffee taste. My boys reckon that they're the best iced lattes that they've had!

The staff were always polite, friendly and efficient and although every staff member was accomodating, 'Rebecca' was a gem and always made our visit a great experience. If you like great coffee, service and a clean relaxing environment, do yourself a favour and visit the Rusty Rails Cafe. You'll be glad you did! We will certainly be back. Well done guys and...

A really nice cafe in Gympie station. Friendly staff, good coffee and food especially their churros waffles were sooo good! Absolutely love the piano man playing in the cafe too. Truly add to the charm of the cafe. Make sure you book a table and come early if you're going on the Mary Valley Rattler as they get really busy just before departure. You can book via their website :)

September 2025 and the scones and coffee are still great. It can get busy at the Rusty Rails if the train is in, but it's special to see the old engin fire up, tooting after every one has borded. Twice I've had the date scone with fresh jam and cream on the platform and I will be glad to do it again. Its a great Gympie historical train station so enjoy the food and experience.

This cafe is a good place to have lunch at and if you catch the steam train you can reserve to have lunch there by booking the club cart. I got the salad of the day which was huge but really nice. The club cart gives you snacks as well which is also nice.
