Billy’s Burgers hits that perfect nostalgic note, like a time-warp to a classic family diner or milk bar. Situated on the bustling corner of Barkly and Lygon Street, it has that unmistakable, welcoming vibe that feels instantly familiar.
The menu offers a solid spread of options—fish, chicken, beef, and veg/vegan choices, making it a true people-pleaser in this diverse suburb. The staff were warm and friendly, which only added to the charm.
We both opted for beef burgers—one brisket and the other a classic cheese. Both were deliciously fresh, with patties cooked to juicy perfection. The ingredients were spot-on, and the buns toasted just right.
To go with our burgers, we ordered a cola and BBQ-loaded fries. The fries were crispy, topped with smoky brisket, but we found ourselves wishing for a bit more cheese. The layer on top didn’t carry through, leaving things a bit dry after those first bites.
One small downside was the wooden cutlery—it jolted me out of the dine-in experience a bit. I’m all for sustainability, but wooden utensils fit better with a takeaway meal or food truck. For dine-in, a simple set of silverware would add a touch of polish. The odd combo of a metal knife with a wooden fork felt like a detail they missed.
Then there’s the lighting: harsh, fluorescent, and a bit too clinical for what’s supposed to be a relaxed burger joint. Coupled with the loud yellow, red, black, and white colour scheme, it creates a vibe that says “eat and go” rather than “sit back and unwind.” The open kitchen and seating might make it tricky to find the right balance, but warmer lighting and a bit cosier furniture could elevate the atmosphere significantly.
I’ll definitely be back to see how Billy’s grows—there’s potential here to become a real...
