Such an unexpected, cozy little gem to discover on a busy road like Johnston St. Like so many others, Commis had been on my list for ages, so I was super excited to finally book a dinner there.

From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the lovely staff. Once seated, we were served a little bowl of popcorn on the house to snack on while browsing the menu—a cute touch!

The menu is perfectly designed for two diners, with lots of small plates ideal for sharing. We ordered the bread with sexy butter (and yes, the butter really lived up to its name), the Commis pickles, scallops, lamb skewers, a beef dish, and potatoes. Every dish was delicious, and it was the perfect amount of food for two.

The atmosphere at Commis is so warm and intimate—especially perfect in autumn. Despite being in a room full of other diners, the acoustics were spot on. It felt like we were in our own little sound bubble, making it a great place to catch up with a friend without having to shout over background noise.

Highly recommend for a cozy, elevated dining experience that still feels relaxed...

Nice little wine bar. The front and back of the venue are nice spots, try and request those. Unfortunately many things on the menu were unavailable when we went including some star dishes (surprisingly for an early evening booking), however the dishes we did try were great. Only note that the honey nut pumpkin is quite small and we probably wouldn’t have ordered if we had known. Shoutout to the citrus delicious dessert for a great end though.

Service was quite bad though, even on a relatively quiet night, we had to wait to be noticed to call over the staff repeatedly for long periods of time to order wines...

Went here for a birthday with the set menu, cocktails and wine and was really impressed. The food is of regular ingredients, but all cooked so well with distinct flavours in each dish and generous portion. The cocktails were delicious, we had one off the menu and one made up for us. Wine recommendations were also spot on. The BEST of our night was how they went out of their way to accommodate a dessert request we put in our booking notes. They were certainly not obliged to do so but it really shows how each customer experience is well cared for. Will...
