Flake Haven Fish & Chippery — Restaurant in Melbourne

Ordered for first time on Friday 19th June 20 a Seafood Basket as our local Hooked on Fish guy has had an accident and we did not want pizza again from our favourite Presto Pizza Guy until next week. Slice of Italy of Lilydale is my favourite too but whilst they deliver as far as Yarra Glen they don't yet deliver when I'm in this part of town. So any way I put in the order at 7.01 pm delivery was to be at 7.52pm but after advice was delivered at 8.04pm which is ok given they must have been busier than the other 117 food places on Menulog last night. I nearly did stuff up the order when some overseas telemarketer suddenly rang me up as i ordered and I could not find the App. Had to sign back in to see if the order had been aborted..lol Yes the order was delivered hot, the chips had just enough salt which was great for a change and the 2 Fried Flakes, 2 Prawns, 4 large Calamai, 2 Scallops, 2 Crab Sticks and plenty of nice soft chips between two people was filling with some of my red wine. $34 plus $5 delivery was better than going out on a cold night. I've been regularly having food from Flake Haven for over a year now ever since my partner moved close by and it is the best fish and chip shop I've ever had food from. We literally order takeaway weekly from here. I've had the chips, chicken burger, potato cake and fish from here. Batter is super crispy on all and the portion size is great. Prices are also really affordable and probably slightly cheaper than most fish and chip places, especially ones of this quality. My partner and I usually order $5 chips (enough for 2-4 people as a side/snack) or chicken burgers/fish if we're having dinner. My partner has tried the lot burger before and has liked it too. Our classic afternoon snack order is $5 chips with extra chicken salt (they don't charge you for the extra salt). Staff are all friendly too which is a bonus! I think locals in the area have the same opinion because the shop always seems to have orders going, even at non-peak times (waiting time is around 10 mins btw). We always call beforehand then pick it up 10 mins later.

We got takeaway. A friend recommended this place for the flake, the chips and the potato cakes. We have not strayed far from another local in the last 5 years so we took a risk. I love fish n chips so I’m picky. OMG! No disappointment here. The batter on the fish was outstanding- close to a tempura. The crispness survived the short car ride. The chips were of particular note; fat, chunky. BUT crispy. The potato cake was thick and full of fresh potato slices but I must admit- not as crunchy as I like them to be. It sounds gross but my work canteen does a triple fry for me and they are half as thick so they are a crunch made in heaven.
