had a craving for HK cafe food, did a quick search for options in Doncaster area and chose Golden Harvest Cafe, as it had menu items to suit my British husband. Cafe was full/overflowing when we arrived at peak dinner time (6pm) but with high turnaround, we were seated within 3mins.
I already knew that I wanted cheesy baked chicken dish, hubby chose curry mixed veg with rice, and we ordered spicy s+p chicken extra to share. These are my go-to dishes at every hk restaurant, and I can tell you that this cafe was one of the best. Drinks arrived quickly, and waitresses kept our cups of tea topped up, and despite how busy the cafe was, it looked like a well-oiled machine. Our food arrived within 10-15mins. Cheesy baked chicken in mushroom sauce with fried rice - this dish is usually with plain rice, so the egg fried rice was a nice difference! Very standard dish, done well, was exactly what I wanted it to be. ✅ Hubby’s curry veg was WAY better than expected. A giant bowl of curry and FRESH steamed veg (ie. not like a stew) - it was full of broccoli and cauliflower florets, shiitake and straw mushrooms and a few pieces of carrot. Great veg dish! ✅ Spicy s+p chicken was delicious - freshly fried, not oily, good flavour, but not spicy at all, but that’s fine. ✅ While we were waiting for our food, we saw the egg waffle someone else ordered, and knew we would have to order it. Even though we ate so much food already, we ordered the egg waffle with ice cream, and did not regret it. Egg Waffle was crispy and delicious.. ✅ we both really enjoyed our dinner, and already planning when we will go back to try other dishes! Service was very good as well -no complaints, and actually appreciate them for doing such a good job in such a busy environment (a little abrupt because they were SO busy, but not rude, and they didn’t make any mistakes, our hot tea was always topped up, and our waitress even stopped back with a friendly/funny comment after we...
Read moreSuper unfortunate that I have to write this as I have had some pleasant meals from this place but their consistency and lack of transparency is what does them in. Specifically ordered my regular dish as I have done many times and you can see it mentioned in the reviews below as "fried spaghetti with black pepper beef" only to be told that it was called something else to which I trusted them as I have ordered the same thing, multiple times both in store and for takeaway using the exact same words. Upon pickup I received a completely different dish with black bean sauce, easy no biggie I'll just give them a call and see if I can go back and pickup what I originally ordered right? Wrong, apparently I ordered the wrong dish despite specifically saying black pepper beef with fried spaghetti/noodles over the phone (which is delicious btw definitely order it, just hope they don't shame you into thinking you ordered something else 🫣). Ultimately whilst they are lovely on the phone they offered no solutions to their mix up and I'm left with no...
Read moreI have been to many HK style cafes both local and back in HK. The atmosphere at Golden Harvest was quite good. It gave the authentic cafe vibe. I like the daily specials which I can check out on FB before visiting the restaurant. The place is usually busy and was busy when I went for lunch on a Monday. The menu was extensive and had everything to suit everyone's taste. I ordered the pork chop and spam in black pepper sauce on rice. My friends ordered the same but on spaghetti. Another friend ordered curry ox tongue on rice. All the dishes looked and tasted yummy. As we ordered lunch specials, we got a free drink each. I didn't take a photo because I was too thirsty but the milk tea was fairly authentic too. I just wish the cups were bigger :)
Overall, this is a better than average HK style cafe. The staff were friendly. I am not sure why there was so much negative feedback. I do speak Cantonese so maybe that's why. I would recommend this to my friends...
