Disappointing from start to finish and still didnt get to try the scones.
First impressions matter, and this place got off to a bad start. We walked in and waited at the entrance no greeting, no acknowledgment. After standing there awkwardly for two minutes, I had to walk up to the counter and ask to be seated. That should’ve been my sign to leave, but we decided to give it a chance.
We were seated and handed menus... then forgotten. Staff avoided eye contact like it was a sport. I had to get up again just to place our order. They apologised and said someone would come over. Eventually, someone did.
I ordered scones. My partner ordered pancakes. We were asked if we’d like them to come out at the same time, we said yes.
Forty minutes later, only the pancakes arrived. That’s already too long of a wait, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I waited, thinking my scones would be out any second. They never came.
I tried to get the staff’s attention multiple times nothing. It honestly felt like they were purposely avoiding customers. I even saw an elderly woman have to get up and order at the counter herself. That says a lot.
Meanwhile, people who came in after us were being served scones. I finally went up to the counter again, and was told, “Sorry, we made a mistake on the order.” No real urgency, no apology that felt sincere.
Ten more minutes passed. Still no scones. My partner finished her meal, and I gave up. I walked up to pay and voiced my frustration. All I got was, “We made a mistake,” and 10% off the bill.
Frankly, not good enough after wasting over an hour for food I never received. The staff seemed indifferent, the service was chaotic, and the place itself feels dated and poorly run.
I don’t usually leave reviews, but this one was earned. I’d suggest finding scones somewhere else ideally a place that values customers and delivers what...

We’ve been coming to Kalista Tearooms for over two decades, watching it evolve through several changes of ownership. Each transition in the past brought either a continuation or even an improvement in the quality of food and service. Unfortunately, this latest change has broken that tradition.
While the menu remains the same and many of the familiar staff are still present, the overall atmosphere has shifted noticeably. What once felt warm and genuine now feels more transactional, with a marked drop in attention to detail and quality.
Our most recent visit confirmed our concerns. The $28 big breakfast was underwhelming: one piece of toast, soggy undercooked potato rosti, two eggs, a sausage, and what appeared to be blanched spinach. The spinach was watery and placed directly on the toast, making it soggy as well. The rosti, which used to be a beautifully crisp and golden piece, came out as a thick, mushy block—barely appetizing. The usually beautiful presentation was not there. The sausage, the only unchanged item, is clearly still sourced from an external supplier.
It’s disappointing to see yet another iconic venue in the Dandenong Ranges lose its charm and standard, much like what happened with King Henry Café in Sassafras. Kalista Tearooms was always a treasured spot, but sadly, it feels like it’s lost its soul in the latest handover.
We hope the new owners take on board the legacy they’ve inherited and make the effort to restore what once made this...
