Went here for my birthday with the family (which used to be my favourite restaurant)!!! I am very dissapointed with our experience, and noticeably was way different to all past times (which I always spoke highly of- food, atmosphere and service) We took a gamble knowing it had changed owners, unfortunately they have not done it justice. First off the main door was locked on arrival, no staff were present to greet us at the door. We were told we had choice of table, but were not shown available spaces we could sit (then finally by I asume an old staff member) we had a nice room set up for our booking. Back door was open, so our table area was freezing and had a draft. No water was given at table, we had to ask twice over a 40 min period to get it. We had to ask to have drink orders taken (probably after 25 min of being there). Drinks took ages, mind you it was pretty quiet for a Saturday night. 4 drinks came out together, other 2 we had to re-ask if they were being made. one wanted a light beer which we were told they had none (terrible for a restaurant). My gin that came out late and after being asked aasked was half full with no ice....I basically had to explain how to re make my gin and tonic. Another ordered a bottle of wine, and got given the wrong one (which wasnt even on the list). Ok...so food. We had to again ask to put a entree order in, to only be told once asking for particular items they were unavailable. We also then asked in curiosity what other items were not available, to be told 80% of dessert menu was unavailable. Terrible communicating on their part. I was glad the beef cheeks were still really yummy (only plus), meals did come out pretty quick, but again not all together and quality of rest items were average. Not once were we asked by staff how were the meals or if we wanted more drinks, we had to chase them down everytime. Again who wanted another mid strength (due to no low), got given a cider!! Very bad given he was the driver!! We were going to order more drinks, coffee and desserts, but no one asked! And when we finally gave up on idea and just wanted coffee they were turning all the lights off in the place and said they close at 8pm!!! It was 8:15 on a saturday night! And if we were asked earlier we would have spent more money! Soooo terrible!!! Place felt like a monday night we were only people there at 7:30! And even then they were turning off lights. Toilets were also dirty and not maintained. Now for end! Went to the till to pay after feeling rushed to leave. Multiple items added onto bill we did not have! So lucky we all checked and each had to go through it several times!! We asked the waitresses how long they had been there, 3 days and 3 weeks. Not their fault the night was terrible! Shame on owners for not training any staff or not having any supervisor on shift! Man this place has really gone downhill and it shows they really dont care. When your paying $80-$100 per head you expect quality with everything! Sorry we...
Read moreArguably one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in the Dandenong Ranges. I’ve been going to King Henry’s for many years and for a good reason. The restaurant is located just off the main road (and on its own). Parking is at the back of the restaurant or on the main road if the parking is full. I believe the restaurant used to be a house back in the day as the interior and exterior resembles a really old style house. It’s beautiful in the summer and sitting outside as the restaurant is isolated so you’re surrounded by the lush green nature. The interior is also really nice as they have a fireplace for the cold winter days. The decor is also very pretty and inviting. The staff are great, friendly and kind. Good service every time 🙂 I usually come here for an afternoon coffe and cake or for lunch. It does get busy so best to book if you’re coming for a meal although you could be lucky and find a table if you walk in. Now, there food: absolutely superb - hence why I keep coming back! They’re consistent with the quality. Their flavours are wonderful and seasoning just right and their dishes cooked very well. You’re not overpowered by a particular flavour or seasoning, everything is just well balanced. This particular visit my company came for Sunday lunch. The beef cheeks is just wonderful. Cannot fault it. The beef tender, melts in your mouth! Now I’m not a particular fan of gravy but their gravy is lovely (light and not dense). The garlic prawns with rice is also a fantastic option, with the rice being ‘fluffy’. The orange chicken is also very tasty and flavoursome. The medieval trencher is good too but should have had more sauce to it as it was a bit on the dry side. And maybe more veggies…otherwise it’s a big serve and very filling. I’ve previously had the beef burger which is again another great option! The garlic bread was yummy, would order it again as an entree. The chocolate brownie was delicious but was a small serving size, which was disappointing. The ice cream on top was bigger than the actual brownie! The crepe was a let down. A bit bland that probably needed a topping like chocolate or strawberry. I’ve had the apple and berry crumble in the past which is fantastic! Their coffee is so good! I’m a tough critic when it comes to my coffe but they make it good. As long as they keep up with the quality now that they have new owners. That’s the main thing! Otherwise if you’re heading to the Dandenong ranges pleas don’t miss King Henry. They have something that everyone will enjoy. Edit: their scones are amazing! The best I’ve...
Read moreThis place definitely has potential and my Husband and I both enjoyed our experience.Customer service is very good and the waiters were attentive and happy to help. The restaurant itself looks great very nice to see that a lot of the architecture has stayed how it is. The pictures, paintings and fire place was a nice touch. What I would suggest would be to remove the fairy lights as it takes away from the atmosphere) and add some renaissance music ( there would be a Spotify playlist I am sure) at least for the dinner service which I feel will make the whole experience that much better. I was very impressed to see mead on the menu which was a staple back in the day, it was fantastic but I would recommend rather than having it in spirit place it with the beers and ciders so it is a bit more recognisable. The food I feel was good but did need a bit of work. I am aware times are tough so I can understand a few things however here are a few considerations. We ordered the cob bread to start. The presentation was awesome (gave both my husband and I a laugh) The bread and dukkah was fantastic however the whipped butter was a sachet you would get at a continental breakfast which was a bit of a shame ( even putting it in a seperate dish would be great). My husband got the stew in a bread bowl which was once again presented very well. The flavours were fantastic however definitely needed a bit more sauce as the bread soaked up quite a bit so ended up being quite dry . The meat was tender however so it made up for some of the dryness.I got the roast of the day which was pork. The presentation was lacking here unfortunately but the vegetables were amazing, in particular the pumpkin and carrots were cooked perfectly. They did skim on the meat a bit however I put that down to the recession and the Yorkshire pudding was a bit eggy for my liking and slightly overcooked . Once again really needed a bit more sauce in particular gravy and perhaps an option when ordering if we wanted apple sauce ( not a biggy for me but realised that this may cause issues for others). Overall a solid meal but does need work in a few areas. I hope these recommendations do not come off as rude and I hope they do take these into...
