A cafe in the Northern suburbs I recommend making a trip to!
The Hot Cake is as good as it looks! The texture was spongey and bouncy similar to steamed cakes paired with fresh fruits (not canned!), banana butterscotch sauce on the side, and mango sorbet created a well balanced sweet yet refreshing taste. Toasted muesli and coconut added an extra crunch!
The Chilli Egg Scramble had layers upon layers of delicate swirly folds in the egg, with crunchy shallots and creamy feta to tone down the spiciness. The addition of spring onions definitely took it to another level.
Southern Fried Chicken Waffles The execution of the dish blew me away! Super juicy chicken breast (twice cooked!) with very crunchy coating, the rosemary infused maple syrup created an explosion of flavour!
My second visit has me convinced this is definitely no ordinary cafe, offering unique dishes and cosy interior.
Third Visit June 10th 2022 O’hey Cafe on O’hea St is not only aesthetic inside and out, all the dishes are carefully crafted to be pleasing to the eye and tastebuds! 👅
I have been here 3 times and was impressed with each visit, having tried a variety of their menu.
The French Toast is definitely ⛅️ GOD TIER ⛅️ The texture between the outer encrusted with cornflakes and fluffy inner was well balanced. And there was good contrast between sweet and tart with the syrup, persian fairy floss, white chocolate and fresh berries. I just CANNOT get over the little detail of blueberries stuffed in the raspberries! 🤣
The Signature Brisket has a theatric element to their dish with smoke escaping as the dome is lifted… except we failed having waited too long. 😂 So sorry, no footage! Please go watch it live. Theatrics aside the brisket was tender and flavours seeped throughout the protein. The potato rosti had a thin crispy outer and the inner texture was just right, not over/undercooked. The charred corn added another depth of flavour. This entire dish was simply amazing!
And finally I wasn’t expecting much of Zucchini Fritters, it’s not a dish I order often. However I was pleasantly surprised at the various additions to create a hearty meal. The fried haloumi was the best element of the dish! 🤩

Read moreOne would assume that a cafe in Melbourne could either have bad coffee, or bad service, and still make it as a business, but I never imagined one could have both and apparently still be popular.
The first gripe of mine was found on the menu -- where it states that they do not do split bills or allow food alterations on weekends or public holidays. I'm not sure about you, review reader, but I personally enjoy going to brunch on the weekend with my friends, and most places we go have no issue splitting the bill -- and it seems like O'Hey has no issue with this during the week, so the idea of it being restricted on weekends really rubbed me the wrong way.
The atmosphere would have been fine if there had been literally any attempt at heating the venue. It was wintry cold inside the cafe, which didn't do any favours for the temperature of the food when it came out.
The coffee was alright, maybe, if you live in Wagga Wagga, but it is quite bad for Melbourne. I'm by no means a connoisseur but I can definitely tell when a coffee was made with burned milk.
The service was abhorrent, I'm unsure if it was the waitress' first shift or not, but it sure felt like it. Between being left to wait for 5+ minutes from being seated before drink order was taken, spilling a drink on the table and not clearing away the rubbish of dirty napkins we had used to clean it up, forgetting our food order after seemingly writing it down and confirming it with us multiple times, having to be asked to refill the table water, and constantly just chatting with the other staff instead of being attentive to the table, it was kinda hard to concentrate on the food.
I was considering having the big breakfast for $26.90, but the fact that I was unable to alter the order (weekends only!) to remove the mushrooms prompted me to change my mind to have eggs my way for $13 instead. This doesn't exactly seem like a great business move to me.
The eggs came out barely warm on a piece of undercooked supermarket bread, with some alfalfa on it or something. I know that inflation is kicking everyone hard, but $13? For this?
I am honestly baffled as to how this business thrives. Is the weekday fare better? Was it just a rush day full of new staff? I'll never know, because I'll never go back....
