This is my second time visiting Parotta Station. I previously visited their now-closed store, and I must say, the new store size is a significant improvement. There are more comfortable seats, and the environment is much more family-friendly. The staff were extremely friendly; however, when asked about the differences between types of Parottas, the server had to consult the chef to respond. I wish the staff were better trained about the main dish of the restaurant – Parotta.
The store offers plenty of car parking, which is a plus. However, one major letdown was the self-closing door, which was ajar. During the peak of winter in Melbourne, we experienced cold chills as customers opened the door, which would get stuck halfway closed.
The menu was simple and primarily focused on Parotta-based dishes. We ordered Gobi Manchurian as a starter. The portion was good, the dish was served super hot, and it was delicious. However, I was hoping for a drier version rather than gravy. Regardless, we enjoyed it.
We ordered all types of Parotta. As someone from Kerala, where Parotta is a staple, I wanted to explore and taste all of them. The list included Malabar, Kalda, Poricha, and Nei Parotta. My personal favorite was the basic Malabar Parotta. Both Nei (Ghee Parotta) and Poricha (Deep-fried) were extremely oily for my taste. The size of the Parotta is a bit small, and you might end up ordering four per person, which I find to be less value for money. I have had better flaky Parotta for a cheaper price from Kerala restaurants in Melbourne.
The curry portions were small, and both the Goat and Pepper Chicken curries had a similar base and were a bit watery. From a South Indian perspective, they lacked the texture and richness usually expected. We ordered Lemon Soda, and it came in a takeaway cup size, which was very small. I wish it was at least the size of a regular Starbucks iced latte.
Overall, I was a bit let down by the food quantity, quality, and pricing. Additionally, the serving time was slow, causing some of us to wait for our orders even after others had finished half of their meals. If Parotta Station could focus on the above points and revamp their offerings with additional curries that pair well with Parotta, we would love to come back and try again. Otherwise, unfortunately, it’s a no for us to visit Parotta...
