Steeples — Restaurant in Melbourne

I have been to Steeples a couple of times now and have always enjoyed it. If I had written a review on one of those times I would have given the review a 3, or maybe even a 4, but couldn't possibly give it more than a 2 after our time there today. My in-laws booked for us all to have a nice family lunch. We had our orders taken and some of us had entrees and then a while later our mains came out. We were all happy with our meals, and everyone enjoyed them very much. BUT, it was at this point that the service went down very quickly, and really did make what was a nice lunch with family into something that left us feeling very disappointed with the experience. Firstly, when the two steaks ordered were brought to the table, only one of them came with a steak knife. The waitress said she would be back with the other steak knife, and NEVER returned. The steak was eaten using a bread and butter knife. As I said, the meals were very nice and everyone enjoyed them. They were a good size, and I was looking forward to taking home what I couldn't eat at the time, to enjoy for dinner, as was my husband (who only made it through 1/3 of his meal). When I said to the waitress that I wanted to take home what we hadn't eaten, she just said "We don't have a licence to do that" and took our meals away. As, I am sure you would know, there's currently no law in Australia that would prevent a restaurant from offering their customers take-away containers for leftover food. We were quite upset about this occurring, especially as she did not know what she was talking about and just picked up our food and took it away. I even rang Steeples once we were home and asked the staff member who answered the phone if you allowed patrons to take home left overs and I was told that it was fine, you just needed to speak to the Bistro staff. Not the case today! The day then got worst, we all placed our dessert orders, and then they came out in bits and pieces. I was waiting for mine to come, everyone else on the large table received theirs and then after watching everyone eat and finish theirs, I was still waiting for mine! As the finished plates were sitting there for a while and nobody was coming to clear the table, I walked over to the kitchen area and spoke to a different waitress there. I explained that everyone on our table had received and finished their desserts and that I was still waiting for mine. She knew exactly which dessert I was waiting for, and I hadn't even said what table we were on! That waitress (who was very nice about it) did suggest that it would be deducted from the bill, but the bill had already been paid, so that didn't happen! Too late. So, after half the table had left to go home my dessert turned up. It was very nice, and I did enjoy it. I don't think that the waitress who delivered it even bothered to apologise for the major delay. My mother in-law didn't get a cup of tea after her meal, as nobody came and asked if anyone wanted tea or coffee. I would of thought that was a standard thing to do after dessert had been finished by the customers. I did speak to a staff member on the way out about the lack of service today; they said that it had been very busy! There seemed to be hardly any tables in use around us while we were there and didn't seem to be overly busy in the other area. And if bad service can be excused because a venue is busy, then I find that is bad organization by management or staff. I do have to say that the young man at the bar was a delight to be served by and very helpful. I am not going to put the waitress’ name on this review, as I don’t think that is the right thing to do. But I do hope that you are able to talk to your staff regarding these matters and make them aware of the standard of service that is required if they wish to continue working in...

I’m not one to normally do this, though just after dining at Steeples, oh man.. We ordered the salmon, chic parma and chic schnitzel. I have to be completely honest, it was horrible. Absolutely disgusting to charge people good money only to serve that on a table as part of a food service.. Both chic dishes were dry, the sauce on the Parma was way overdone with oregano and sugar, only to be infused with some cheap tin sauce and pizza cheese. It resembles absolutely nothing to a Napoli sauce at all, let alone a chicken parmigiana. The chips were warm, and I think you’d call it coleslaw? This was taken straight from a tub and put into a round dish, and turned upside down onto the plate..Tasteless. The schnitzel came with mushroom gravy? It was simply a warm slime with bits of mushroom in it and had zero flavour, I mean you couldn’t even taste the mushroom! The only thing that helped that was a tone of salt. No flavour at all across the board. I could go on! Terrible. If there are ‘chefs’ putting this together, then the truth be told - they are anything but chefs. A solid chef would rather not do this, than do.. The food was a huge let down and we definitely won’t go back there. The good thing was at least, the guy behind the bar was friendly and warm. No real atmosphere here. Steeples, your investment in pokies, gambling and sports bet detracts you from being a food service, just not worth the time or money unfortunately. Management or budgets issues or both?, no matter, your food is terrible. The food is what should bring people back here, and obviously someone isn’t driving...

When we arrived there after booking shown to our seats after a few minutes the waitress Came we order a entree and our mains to we waited for 30 mins with no sign of a entree Three ppl also had came in and were severed there meal .we were polite we asked the girl If our entree was coming .she came back and said what did you order we can't find the order The maneger came over do you still want ur entree , we will remove that from the bill I get ur mains as we sat we could feel a really annoying feeling as this is not the first time this as happened we decided to give steeples , one more go but this happened again, can't believe this after last night that's we will not be going back every . Not that I want any thing free but after now waiting 50 minutes now if he had of said Sry sir we won't charge you for tonite I might have thought a bout it but this has happened two times now and a bad meal All we could do was to make a decision to walk out and go to the tanti Our meal was severed within 10 minutes I ask you the meals we ordered from steeples was what was on the nights roast was lamb so it was already cooked bad bad bad thumbs down so mad and disgusted in how we were treated
