A Warm and Artsy Café Adventure - Temperance Society Café
Hey there fellow coffee enthusiasts and foodies! Allow me to take you on a whimsical journey to the delightful Temperance Society Café in Hughesdale, VIC 3166. Picture yourself sipping on a cup of joe and immersing yourself in a world of coffee art. The ambiance - strong, the coffee - not as hot as desired, but hey, life is all about surprises, right?
Admittedly, my coffee arrived cooler than I ordered, but fear not! The intricate coffee art and the barista's skill more than made up for it. I still found myself savoring every sip of their delightful brew, even at a lower temperature. I would rate their coffee a solid 3.7 out of 5 because, hey, it's the thought that counts, and they nailed it on the bean quality!
Now, let's talk food! Brace yourselves for a taste explosion, my friends. First up, the “Manchego Lamb Croquette”- a true symphony of flavors. The combination of slow-cooked pulled lamb shoulder, beetroot hummus, vegetable couscous, baby carrot, braised red cabbage, and chipotle mayonnaise danced harmoniously on my palate, leaving me wanting more. The portion size was generous, ensuring that every bite was a delightful experience. I rate this dish a 4.7 out of 5!
Next on the menu, I indulged in “THE PARISIAN (VG)”, formerly known as the French Toast. Oh, how it tantalized my taste buds! The contrasting sweet and sour flavors of French toast with vanilla mascarpone, chocolate, banana, Kiwi, strawberry, blueberry, pomegranate, mango curd, and butterscotch sauce proved to be a match made in culinary heaven. It was like a heartfelt rendezvous with food that left me with a beaming smile. I give this dish a solid 4.5 out of 5.
Finally, my taste adventure led me to the “Energy Loaf”- a bread loaded with dry fruit and nuts, bringing a whole new level of richness and taste to the table. It was utterly divine. I rate the Energy Loaf a wonderful 4.8 out of 5.
What amazed me most about the menu was the variety and creativity. Already, my mind is racing with ideas for my next visit, eager to explore the culinary wonders that await. And the best part? Temperance Society Café welcomes our furry friends! They have an outdoor bench, perfect for embracing the sunshine with our beloved pets by our side.
But wait, there's more! The staff at Temperance Society Café exuded warmth and friendliness, making my visit all the more memorable. Owner, if you're reading this, be proud! Your café is not only a haven for coffee lovers but also a place that instills a sense of belonging and charm.

Read moreTemperance again (who have now followed suit with a few other dining establishments with a weekend surcharge 🙄) but they continue to innovate with creative and exciting dishes that wow diners aesthetically. Todays mango twist was no exception, it is effectively a mango and chocolate delight disguised as a burger, complete with churro chips! Definitely worth trying for something different and unique and hats off to the chef for dreaming up such a cool concept and executing it with aplomb
Update We were invited to Temperance today and I was eagerly anticipating trying the chocolate planet dish which has been causing quite a sensation on Instagram. This is a chocolate and orange panna cotta comprising all of the yummy elements on the plate I so loved about their original panna a year or so ago, the brownie bits, brûlée banana and yummy fresh fruit (mango delish!). This is a visual showstopper and you really can’t go past it, highly instagrammable and sure to make your friends jealous.
Before we got stuck into this however I started with some avocado toast (name me a better duo, I’ll wait) and also snuck some of my husbands rosti which he had accompanying his chilli scramble. There’s also killer air con in there which was perfect on this 34 degree day. Coupled with friendly service it is hard to beat
Original review I was invited to Temperance to try their new winter menu and being my first visit I was pretty excited. The menu retains similar style dishes from its Penta ownership heritage not to mention the pretty smoothies. We sat outside in the heated courtyard and ordered a chai and a peanut butter smoothie- yum.
Food wise we opted to share the chicken burger, the pannacotta and the hotcakes. I have had the hotcakes at Penta and these are equally as stunning and exceptionally delicious. The burger was also very enjoyable and the chips were perfectly well seasoned and crispy.
The pannacotta for me had to be the highlight, I had almost become a little disillusioned with this dish. It’s pretty much become a Melbourne breakfast staple and maybe a bit old hat but this one was simply sensational. The perfect texture, the perfect flavour, just unbelievably light and silky and absolutely stunning on the plate. The accompaniments of granola, fruit, brownie and marshmallow were also well conceptualised. A...

I absolutely loved The Power Bowl, packed with fresh flavors and ingredients. The grilled corn added a sweet and smoky touch, while the pickled cabbage and ginger gave a nice tangy contrast. The cucumber and avocado provided a cooling element to the dish, and the edamame, sushi and quinoa rice added a protein boost that kept me full for hours. And let's not forget about the katsu sauce and wasabi mayo - they were the perfect umami and spicy combination that took this dish to the next level. The Green Land was equally impressive, with its abundance of greens and colorful veggies. The avocado, broccolini, kale, asparagus, and zucchini were all cooked to perfection and were complemented by the pea puree and corn. My friend opted to add potato rosti and bacon to her dish, which made it even more indulgent and satisfying. Both drinks were light and healthy, and provided a great balance to the hearty dishes.
