I'm not a regular at this coffee spot; I simply swing by occasionally for a quick takeaway. The owner, always generous, often leaves a box of coffee bean grounds (waste) on a chair outside with a sign that reads "Free to take." - something like that, cannot really remember what exactly written on the wall.
One late afternoon, just before the shop was about to close, I happened to pass by and noticed the box of bean grounds. Assuming it was part of the usual offering, I grabbed it. To my surprise, a staff member hurriedly shouted me, sternly declaring, "Those are for our customers, please don't take them."
This encounter left me feeling uneasy. It was clear I wasn't considered a patron here. Feeling somewhat unwelcome, I decided to go to another coffee shop just a few steps away from then on.
Is it necessary? If it's advertised as free, why concern yourself with who takes it?
