Working my way through all the chicken pho spots on Vic Street, Van Mai was a solid under-the-radar find. The pho itself was a neutral, hearty chicken style — not heavy on onion or strong flavours like some other places, which I really enjoyed. Broth was lighter and less oily than others I’ve had.
The chicken portion looked good in the photos, but I wanted more protein and added an extra serve for $5. Not sure if it was fully worth $5, but it tasted great nonetheless.
The restaurant itself is huge but was quiet when I visited at lunch, which made it a peaceful spot to enjoy the meal. Service was attentive — one staff member brought water as soon as I walked in and managed the floor alone. Read moreVan Mai has been our favourite Victoria St Vietnamese for some years now. Service is always friendly and attentive and every family member has a favourite dish. When organising a birthday party at home recently I discovered Van Mai also does catering. Minh was a pleasure to deal with when organising the menu and the details for our event. Nothing was too much trouble, including supplying the crockery required and, best of all, the lovely Ha. What an indulgence! Ha was a very diligent and able waitress who was responsible for heating and serving the food at our event. She was competent and capable and very pleasant to deal with. Our guests commented on her service and she helped turn the event into a special occasion for everyone. Best of all - she washed up afterwards and left my kitchen clean and organised. Thanks Ha and thank you Minh! We will continue to...
Read moreBeen going here for many years now, but never had the chance to review. My apologies to the staff at Van Mai. Imo this restaurant is a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle on the Victoria Street. Authentic Vietnamese cuisine at it's best. Decor might be a bit old but that's the way I like. Nice and homey. Stuffed chicken wings are to die for. Authentic Vietnamese sweet and sour soup (Canh chua) taste like mum makes at home. Spring rolls are always tasty. Always friendly and fast service. If you're after mainstream Vietnamese food keep walking further down vic st where all the other restaurants taste the same and serve the same food. If you're after authentic, homey, fresh Vietnamese food. Van mai...
