If you come to Wing Hing Chinese Restaurant looking for fine dining or authentic "Chinese" food, you will likely be disappointed. We came hoping for really good small Australian country town Chinese food, and they delivered.
5/5 rating is for the food. We went to Wing Hing for dinner on Saturday evening. The dining area is dated in a not-been-updated since the mid 80s, early 90s kind of way - it's cute, like travelling back in time.
They were quite obviously understaffed, with the phone ringing off the hook for takeout, the two servers looking a little frazzled but still being friendly when they did interact.. least to say service was very slow and our food order took almost an hour to arrive (there were only two other tables of patrons).
We ordered Spring Rolls ($10), Honey Chilli Chicken ($20), Sweet & Sour Pork ($20), and Special Fried Rice ($16).
Spring Rolls were generic in a good way: tasty, well-fried, crispy on the outside, not dry on the inside, and obviously served straight from the deep fryer. The plum(?) sauce that came with it was odd to me, but my dining partner enjoyed it.
Honey Chilli Chicken was a good serve of chicken breast pieces, coated with the right amount of light batter, fried to perfection, drenched in a sweet, sticky honey and chili sauce that soaked into the batter. So good!
Sweet and Sour Pork was some lean (and gristle free) pork coated with the right amount of batter, fried to perfection and served with pieces of carrot, cabbage and onion in a yummy, tangy, sweet and sour sauce. My only criticism is the lack of pineapple pieces I was hoping would be in the sauce.
The Special Fried Rice was everything you expect from a tasty, well-seasoned fried rice - not gluggy, not greasy, tossed with veges, bbq pork.. delicious!
I look forward to eating here again if I'm ever...
Read moreNot a great first impression to be honest, though I will admit that coming from an abundance of choice in Perth has probably spoilt us. Place seemed pretty popular with the locals so we went on that recommendation. Ordered food and then when going to pick up was given wrong order, which we didn't discover till we had driven back to Kendenup (20+mins away). Had to drive back and was given original order which had been left waiting the entire time. Obviously, food was barely luke warm when we eventually got around to eating it more than an hour after original pick up time. Overall, food was all pretty bland but somehow also overpowered with garlic (I normally love garlic but it was too much even for me). Meat (beef) was tough and tasteless, like it had been overcooked separate to sauce and then mixed at the end. Noodles likewise had no flavour and were quite dry. Mixed veg was definitely overdone and was just soggy and all but turned to mush as you tried to eat it. Fried squid was soggy and oily as it has been left in the paper bag to cool. All dishes were just very watery too. In the end, neither of us could finish anything and so it ended up going free to anyone wanting a free meal at the lodge we stayed at...most likely got tossed the following day after we checked out.
To top it off, was a bit miffed that the other person (whose order we were originally given) got fresh food cooked for them. All we got, as a sorry, was the bag of spring rolls from said wrong order and 2 bags of prawn crackers, which we never wanted. Would much rather have had our meal made fresh, tbh.
Might try again if and when I'm down that way next, at which point I will happily edit this review if it...
Read morePleasantly surprising for a regional Chinese restaurant. Ok the decor is straight out of the 70's and they may not have updated it, but by gum its clean. (Not even dust in hard to reach places in the exposed brick) The food was bog standard but well cooked, lots of it, and speedy. The service was nice and friendly (Ok we were there on a Wednesday evening, and the only patrons, but the takeaway was doing brisk business) The combination fried rice was likely to get at least a well done from uncle Roger (the peas are a necessity in regional Australia to avoid a riot) the sweet and sour pork was superbly crispy and the dough to pork ratio was in favour of the pork. The sauce was made in house and not the candy red out of a jar of so many others. The beef with ginger and spring onions was tasty and the veges soft but still with a bit of crisp. Will be coming back to explore...
