Cafe Matteo — Restaurant in Queensland

Probably the best cafe in Cairns suitable for all…. fellow Poms and Aussies! The variety of food available is exceptional, serving breakfast favourites and hot/cold lunches with a selection of sandwiches, pastries, sweet treats and other baked goods such as UK favourites such as pork pies, sausage rolls, scotch eggs and meat/veggie slices! All of which I have tried and are super tasty! You can also have a traditional Sunday roast any day of the week - with a Yorkshire pudding!! The full English breakfast is also an absolute winner, black pudding, mushrooms, sausages, bacon and eggs cooked to liking and a generous portion of baked beans! The coffee was tasty I will give them that, and the floor staff were accommodating. Unfortunately, the food was very underwhelming, to say the least. After a longer than usual wait (no apologies) the chef came out of the kitchen, sat down and talked to his mate, then finally returned to the kitchen as we waited longer. Meals arrived, poached eggs were well overdone, the corn fritters were under cooked, gooey centered. The manager explained they were understaffed....but there were floor staff aplenty who could have kept on top of our table and at least approached us to ease the upset. More meals were offered but politely declined due to the current situation so coffee credit was then agreed. I hope they use this as a learning curve. Less floor, staff more...

I have treated myself to a nice breakfast at Cafe Matteo today…I have been there for meals (mainly breakfasts) many times before and have taken a lot of friends and family who were all equally impressed….but this was the first time for me under new management and I’m trying to find words! I had the big brekkie (and I’m very fussy when it comes to my crispy bacon😉) all I can say- the whole meal was just to die for 🤤 It was a pure taste explosion. The mushrooms and especially the tomato were seasoned just to perfection….let alone the well cooked Chorizo and perfectly cooked poached eggs 🤩 Kudos to the chef!!!
