There is no doubt about it the hungry pug does a lot about service for the community of Mareeba. So we are not here today to review the community service, we are here to review the food. The hungry pug is one of those cafes where if you want a toasted sandwich you are to take what they have prepared in the cold display. Where are the days of where you could order a custom-made sandwich the way you like it. I have been trying to order a toasted chicken cheese onion mayo sandwich from this cafe for a long time now. Occasionally I go in and ask again but always get the same reply, we make our chicken sandwiches and put them in the cold display and they the only chicken sandwich we have available. I went into The Hungry Pug after a long day at work, searching to satisfy my burger craving. I had my mind on one thing. My goodness did it exceed my expectations. I ordered a beef burger with chips for an excellent price and what came out was the biggest, juiciest, freshest burger I’ve ever encountered. Even my first bite changed my life. I can’t be passionate enough about this. My only grievance is that I do not live in the vicinity of this joint and I will be forever trying to meet this standard. The staff were also very friendly and clearly attentive to their customers. They also sell local produce, and support the community (have a look at the wall). 10/10 efforts to all involved. We attended on Easter Saturday and the workers reminder everyone that came in about the public holiday surcharge before taking their orders. I had the gluten free cheeseburger with added pineapple and THE BUN HELD TOGETHER THE WHOLE TIME! It never fell apart or became too mushy to eat. The chips were hot, fresh and the right crunch in my opinion. The workers were also kind enough to point out where the public toilets were across the street and to recommend not going alone just in case. They happily held our table number til we walked back in.
