A great recommendation from our villa rental saw us visiting Cactus Kangaroo twice! And we were not disappointed. Cactus sits on the left side of Dauncey St in Kingscote, as you approach Drew Street and we could have walked there, had it not been so chilly. But it truly was a great find. I can see where Cactus got its name, more befitting of a Mexican restaurant than a local bar and cafe on Kangaroo Island. But the decor was cool and basic and "sea-sidy" with arched mural paintings that made the interior interesting and chilled and thematic. The staff were amazingly helpful and friendly, which adds that even-better tick to what was outstanding food. My two poached eggs on sour dough bread came with ample portions of bacon and a garnishing of rocket salad. Truly excellent. I had it twice. And talking of twice, I always ordered two cappuccinos! As a coffee aficionado, I can attest to these being amazing too. Cactus is must visit. They have awesome, friendly staff and owners . I just wish I'd visited there during the summer months, either to just hang out or simply have a glass of wine too, rather than being all rugged up on a cold morning.

Store appeared clean inside and outside, service was friendly and bubbly. Unfortunately I was surprised some local fruit wasn't used to make smoothies with the extremely limited drinks in the fridge. Given that there is one competitor in town it's no wonder why you are so busy. The major downfall was the food unfortunately, with no availability of using normal bread and only a terrible sourdough that was barely edible with the crust so hard. I was surprised that the cooks didn't know how to cook scrambled eggs so instead asking for fried to receive poached, after asking them to fix the order I received fried eggs very alive still, having to take it back a third time asking them to kill them and make it double dead. The third time receiving a baked tart as a gesture for making so many mistakes was nice but I couldn't eat the tart so it was pointless bringing it out. All I wanted was simple bacon and eggs on toast but its ok. I was surprised also by no cutlery on on outside tables and having to grab some from other tables before eating too, I understand you might have been busy so it was ok. Apart from that keep up the good work.

The Cactus Cafe is a nice, small cafe with indoor and outdoor, undercover dining available. Suitable for small brunches and coffee, it offers a small range of tasty food. I had the pulled pork quesadilla, which was tasty while my partner ordered the smashed avocado breakfast. The pulled pork was packed with flavour but a little hard to cut with the cutlery. I also had the iced chocolate, which wasn't very chocolatey in flavour. They make their own chocolate flavouring. However, I'd definitely suggest 2-3 shots of their chocolate flavouring in this if you want a real chocolatey taste. The drinks came out quickly, and the latte was repotedly fine. Average Cafe prices are to be expected (see pics of the menu). There is limited on-street parking available nearby. Overall, a nice, pleasant atmosphere and experience that would be recommended to others.

I hate to be the one that will say somrthing about a local place that lives by tourism. But my feedback is aiming for improvements. So here it goes...

Good food and well presented. Do not go expecting a A+++ dish as some in other reviews are saying. Foodwise, good and kitchen staff is the reason why i did not give 1 star to this place. Service however was terrible. We were 5 people (1 being a 7 months baby) and booked table for 12pm and only ordered by 12:10pm. By 12:15am the manager slides in a paper on the table saying "this is just for an upcoming booking...". Not a problem until we saw that the booking was for 1pm!! So I questioned him if that meant that we needed to be gone before 1pm and he replied with the question "isn't 45 minutes enough?" I shureggled and he said "we see how we go". Food had arrived at 12:30pm and, as you probably imagined, we needed to speed things up. As soon as we finished our meal the same manager asks to clean the plates and did not even bother offering coffee nor desserts. He clearly wanted us gone asap. Never felt so unwanted in a restaurant.

In the nutshell, if you want a good food without good service, that's your place. But if you want the whole experience, then find...
