Something has changed here, and it’s not for the better. It’s not many dining places that make you openly want to rinse your mouth out in the street. Gone are the days of friendly service and fresh delicious stir fries steaming on crunchy egg noodles. What I just got was a $22 dribble of over-sauced, soggy coriander slop with a few old prawns chucked in … and clearly it was still too much to expect the container to be filled. The server also rudely yelled “hell-ooohhh” to me - even though I was sitting right in front of him - AND had been forced to wait for this very forgettable dish. For all you know mate, I could have been writing this review while you were yelling at me! You know something’s wrong with a place when even the scungy-looking pigeons were looking unimpressed wandering around. Places like this remind me why I like to cook for myself at home and why it’s difficult to feel any sympathy for restaurants that cry poor and whinge about not having enough business! If you don’t like the industry anymore, get out and let someone who has the energy and motivation to create take over! Never again. And if you choose to pay for this slop, don’t say you weren’t warned. Now, where to throw out this leftover mess soaking in at least a cup of salty soy sauce in the container… Am pretty sure even the pigeons don’t want...
Read moreBun Me in Leichhardt is a decent spot for a quick Vietnamese feed. My boss and I stopped by for lunch and decided to go with their classic banh mi. It wasn’t bad at all — fresh bread with a nice crunch, good flavour balance, and the fillings were generous enough. Definitely not the worst I’ve had, but not quite the standout I was hoping for either.
The flavours were solid — the pickled veggies had that nice tang, and the pork was seasoned well — but overall it felt a little pricey for what you get. For me, it sat somewhere in the middle range: enjoyable, but didn’t quite hit that “wow” factor you sometimes find in smaller, hole-in-the-wall Viet places.
That said, the service was friendly and quick, and the shop itself was clean and easy to find. I’d happily come back to try their noodle dishes or rice plates next time, because I get the sense that’s where they really shine.
If you’re in the area and craving a decent banh mi, Bun Me will do the job — just don’t expect it to blow your mind. Still a nice,...
Read moreDecided to try Bun Me as I always walk past it. The nice, modern look of the store made me think the quality of their food would be good. Was happy to pay extra for a Bahn mi because I assumed the ingredients and product would be better than other local places. But was pretty disappointed, $10 for a crispy pork Bahn mi and there was barely any pork on it, didn't taste very fresh and was just overall disappointing. The service wasn't exactly friendly either.
I would say to anyone looking for a tasty, good value and decent sized Bahn Mi. You should probably look elsewhere like some of the local Vietnamese bakeries in the area. Norton Street Bakery down the road towards Parramatta road does a much better...
