Monkey King Drummoyne: Appalling Customer Service

I’ve always believed good food is only half of a great dining experience—service is equally important. Unfortunately, Monkey King Drummoyne failed miserably in this regard during my recent visit.

I arrived at 2:20 pm, well within their posted operating hours (closing at 3 pm), intending to have a quick meal. As I approached the counter to place my order, the lady behind the counter brusquely informed me, “We are closed, takeaway only.” When I pointed out that they were still open until 3 pm, she dismissively replied, “Ahh, but you have to leave by 2:45 pm.”

Reluctantly, she took my order after I explained we’d eat quickly and leave soon. Her attitude remained cold and unwelcoming throughout, mumbling comments to the kitchen staff while taking our order. To make matters worse, while I was eating my meal at 2:40 pm, I witnessed her tell another walk-in customer that the restaurant was closed. It was disheartening to see a business actively turn away potential customers, especially on a rainy day in an almost empty restaurant.

The food here might be good, but the abysmal customer service ruins the entire experience. If the owner or franchisee had been present, I doubt such behavior would have been tolerated. It’s shocking to see staff disregard paying customers and potential sales so blatantly.

Monkey King Drummoyne desperately needs to revisit their customer service standards. Until they do, I won’t be returning—and I certainly won’t recommend this place to others. Dining out should be a pleasure,...

I have been ordering from MK for a few years. The food is decent and satisfies the Thai cravings. However, I have been disappointed in my recent ordering with them. When ordering their Yellow Chicken curry they advertise "potatoes" yet it only comes with 1/4 piece. I noted it in my order notes the 2nd last time and it was ignored altogether. I put it in the notes again last night and they called me before delivery and said that they only put one piece in, that is their portion size and if I wanted more it was extra $. I noted that they advertise "potatoes" plural and that they should either change their wording or honour my request free of charge. They said that it was not possible as that is how they portion the meals. That seemed very odd to me that they couldn't add another piece of potato in, even just this once, how much is a potato? I asked to speak to the manager but I was told they were not in. They apologised and said that I should provide feedback to which I told them I did in my previous order from Feb, I wrote a complaint directly to them about the wording and the disappointment at the measly 1/4 potato. Seeing as they have ignored that feedback that I sent directly to them that is why I am adding this as a Google review in the hope they actually do...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Monkey King in Drummoyne and was thoroughly impressed by both the food and the service. It was a casual lunch with a friend and even though the ambiance is lacklustre the food made up for it tenfold.

The steamed barramundi was a standout—remarkably fresh and expertly cooked, retaining a delicate texture that was just divine.

The eggplant dish was another highlight—so delicious that I’m still thinking about it! It had the perfect balance of flavors and the vegetables were cooked to perfection, maintaining their crispness and freshness. The Penang curry was equally memorable; rich, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. I found myself savoring every drop of the sauce, it was simply that good.

The attention to detail in the ingredients, with all the vegetables so fresh and crunchy, really elevated the meal. I have no doubt I’ll be returning soon for another round of these unforgettable dishes.
