This business generally makes things spot on for medium value sushi and sashimi.
Although I was very disappointed tonight. Thought I'd change it up and went for beef teriyaki. Medium rare.
The product came out looking gorgeous, first bite was lukewarm and overly chewy. Like chewing gum. For Japanese beef from a menu, it really tasted like the cut was incorrect. Angering my partner. I asked the waiter, is the beef supposed to taste like chewing gum? Can you please have this cooked correctly?
I asked for it to be remade to the dread of my partner.
Second serving served by end of us eating the other dishes. The beef was served medium to well done.
My partner was livid. I'm commonly the guy that returns an incorrectly made meal. We are paying for the product.
Without being rude I let the waiter know that the product was overcooked and I refuse to pay as we had finished our other 3 dishes.
I have given 4 stars. As all other products were outstanding. But the beef chef needs a stern talking too. I've lived with head and sous chefs from steak restaurants. It's not that hard to get right. And if you choose to serve beef teriyaki as a beef steak in a Japanese restaurant. Well.... Japan equals top beef knowledge. A5 Wagyu?
And at least my partner, who gets livid when I return meals asked me to return her steak at a pub several weeks as they cooked a medium rare as full medium. Most people are embarrassed to return meals. At quality restaurants this needs to be changed. I expect a quality restaurant to have a chef/cook know how to cook their own products.
Sometimes I get called picky. Luckily, I'm the guy that my friends also rely on to send back their incorrectly made order.
I'm not overly angry but very upset that I had to put my partner, who I love dearly, through this ordeal.
They offered to pay tonight. And used the excuse, would you ask my grandmother to recook a meal? Hell no. But if I purchased a meal with income for her, or her grandmother, and the meal was not cooked to purchase standard I would happily return it.
I appreciate the waiter returning to apologise and stating the particular meal would be removed from the purchase order.
Although the disappointment that my partner felt having taken me out to dinner was worth far more than the $22 beef dish. Seriously. Watch a guga movie if you can't be bothered to learn from the...
Read moreUpdated review on 9th Dec: We took up Mr Lau's gracious offer and returned to Niji for dinner tonight. This time everything was spot on, just like all our previous meals there (except for the bad hiccup from 3 weeks ago). Joyce looked after us for most of our meal, and she was lovely from the moment she showed us to our seat till the moment we left. She is certainly the stalwart of the front of the restaurant, we only have good memories of her whenever we have the pleasure of having a meal there while she is on duty. This goes back over 5 years or more, as I seem to recall her there since our earliest visits to Niji back in 2012/2013 (exact year escapes me). Many thanks again to Mr Lau for showing us that your customers are indeed important, you are certainly a man of your word. We will not hesitate to continue recommending Niji to everyone and will certainly return over and over again.
Previous visit review: Used to be our local fav local japanese. Visited yesterday approx. 2.45pm, the place was almost deserted as expected after the lunch crowd. However, waited over 30 minutes for food, then saw similar bento set that we ordered given to another table who walked in 10 minutes ago. Queried with one of the staff in black (one of the supervisors perhaps?), as I was very annoyed at this stage since my 3 y.o son started to get agitated as he is hungry after waiting for so long, same with my heavily pregnant wife. Told him if the food is not out in 5 minutes we will leave as I cannot believe they prepared food for the customers who just walked in first and ignored us, even though we had our water refilled at least 3 times. To my shock he says our order was not even registered on their computer system, and the way he said it was as if that was a good reason why we did not get our food. So we just left as we were past hungry and upon getting to the door I heard a whisper of a sorry. Goes to show how much they care about their customers. It was not even a busy time, and the number of staff outnumbered the customers by almost double and they cannot even get an order delivered to the kitchen staff who mostly had nothing to do. What a shame, as we previously liked this place and recommended it all the time to family...
Read moreWe visited Niji Sushi Bar (Kingsford) at 6 PM, on a Sunday night and thankful we made a reservation for a table as it was very busy. (Limited table seating, but they also do offer Shushi train seating)
We opted for the degustation menu priced at $69.00, or $85.00 with matching wines.
The Food Review: worth slightly over 3.5 stars
Charred Yukari Edamame: A delightful start, seasoned well and perfectly charred.
Miso Soup: A comforting classic, though I’ve certainly had better elsewhere.
Kingfish Carpaccio: Thinly sliced and refreshing, this dish was good, however some diners mentioned they would have preferred thicker portions .
Spicy Tuna Canapé: the combination of textures and flavours I thought was impressive but others at the table said they had experienced better.
Sashimi (Salmon + Tuna): Fresh and tasty, though it didn’t quite reach the level of excitement of the previous dishes.
Salmon Nori Taco: nice with good flavours
Miso Cream Scallops: Unfortunately, most were overcooked and a bit dry, which was disappointing.
Slipper Lobster Tempura: Fair, but I expected more; it contained only a minimal amount of Balmain Bugs- not lobster, plus we faced a 10-minute wait for the same dish for the other diners.
Wagyu Kushiyaki Beef Skewers: Tender and tasty
Chef's Selection of Desserts: A lovely finish to the meal, with a nice variety to enjoy.
As for the Wine Pairing, the selections were good, but unfortunately, they didn’t arrive in sync with the dishes, which was frustrating.
A tip for fellow diners: consider BYO wine for just $5 per person; it could save you from the wine timing woes and a dry mouth.
Service: The staff were friendly and attentive, consistently refilling our water every 3-5 minutes. I just wish the matched wine service had been as timely.
Overall, most dishes were enjoyable, though a few missed the mark.
Niji Sushi Bar is a good choice for a casual night out, especially if you opt to bring your own wine!
Just a note: there is an additional 10% surcharge for dining on Sundays. 15% on...
