I visited St George Leagues Club on New Years Eve with a female companion who is a Member of Canterbury Leagues Club. We firstly visited Canterbury Leagues expecting some form of NYE entertainment but there wasn't anything at all so I suggested that we drive over to St George Leagues as it was a much bigger Club & I had spent several great NYE's here in the past albeit over a decade ago.
My first surprise was that my Lady companion could not use her Canterbury Leagues Membership Card to gain access to St George so as she had no other form of photo ID on her I had to then pay to join the Club (I used to be a member) & sign her in. Whatever happened to reciprocal Membership access between Leagues Clubs like used to happen in the past? After I had joined the Club we then went searching for the NYE entertainment but lo & behold there was nothing at all...no DJ, nobody just strumming a guitar or anything & I confirmed with the Reception desk that there was nothing on. I could not believe that a major Leagues Club would let the opportunity of NYE slip by without trying to attract more patrons to the Club. Seems like they value the moneymaking robots playing the poker machines much more than providing NYE entertainment.
So, being 9:30 PM, now what? We then made the decision to drive to Bankstown Sports Club & what a revelation it was which left the 2 Leagues Clubs we had visited earlier in its dust. There was actually 3 choices of free live entertainment to choose from being a DJ, a Guitar & Vocal Trio & finally a live 5 piece group which was our choice & we had a great night
I might also add that it was totally free to join the Bankstown Sports Club & Membership is for Life & they also give you food & coffee freebies on joining. The excellent range of live show entertainment is also second to none. St George Leagues could really learn a lot from their business model & maybe turn the clock back a bit to how...
Read moreI went to this club tonight for APL Poker. It was my first time coming here. It was a nice experience and pulls off a nice casino resort.
There were a few complications with sign up registration unfortunately.
I agreed to get a $11.00 sign up. As I finished filling out the registration form, I produced my licence to a lady named 'Clare' for proof of identity and age. Now, my licence is a little bit wear and tear. The expiry date in the bottom right is suppose to be 2018 but over the year that I have had my licence, the number 8 has been scraped off at the bottom due to lack of having a decent wallet. The receptionist, Clare, did not accept my licence because she could not tell if the last number of the expiry date was an 8, 0 or 9. And told me that I would not even be able to get into any rsl, league club or anywhere else that needed proof of identity because of that unreadable detail.
I mean hey I agree with her about needing to get a replacement but every place that I have been to and given my licence to, in that state, they have no problem. I ended up getting my friend to sign me in as a guest and then went off to play poker. At break time, I go down to the reception again and Clare is not there. So I said why not ? I walk over to reception and a nice gentleman asks me how can he be of assistance. I tell him I would like to register as a member and I KID YOU NOT, WITHIN 3 MINUTES, I HAD MY MEMBERS CARD. The guy did not even look twice at my licence nor question anything about the state of it. Praise the nice gentleman, but Claire come on, you could of accepted my licence instead of turning me down.
Now I am going to remember that every time I walk in. Such a fuss over nothing....
Read moreJune 2025 • solo The Jubilee Brasserie used to be very busy for Sunday lunch and it served great food. But that has all changed. No long queues this time and despite the club car park being nearly full, not many patrons actually dining and this was around 1.30pm usually the busiest time. I orderd snapper with brocolini and chips - $30. It took almost half an hour after ordering. I couldn't understand why. Only two cooks working, used to be more. But they certainly did not appear over-rushed and very few dishes were coming out. The grilled snapper fish was as good as you expect, just cooked. The brocolini was swamped in butter and the chips were the standard ordinary pre-cooked chips provided by wholesalers you now get in most clubs and they were only warm, soft and unapertising. Eat a few and you've had enough. I can remember, probably 3 years ago, I used to love the chips at St George when they were crispy, bigger and served in a metal rack- probably fully made there. But now all they do is fry the wholesale packaged chips and serve them. Without great crispy chip, there is no reason to go there for lunch anymore. I'll just buy a piece of snapper for $8 and some brocolini (not drowned in butter) and have oven fries which taste much better than the St George fries. But this change I see is not just at St George Leagues Club. Most clubs today have slackened on the food. Clubs figure patrons will play the machines anyway and it's more important to have snacks and drinks (even free) readily available for them while they are playing to keep them playing. They don't want the patrons leaving their machines to go to the dining room, they might not return to...
