This was our 2nd visit to Sunset Diner & it was exactly what we wanted. We are on 1 income at the moment, so it's a huge expectation that we put on a restaurant when we dine in. Friendly, helpful staff & outstandingly tasty food. Yes, it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for & for us, it is a treat. This time, we ordered 2 meals: Crispy Chicken Burger, add bacon with iced latte & loaded fries, and Pulled Pig Burger from the daily specials menu with a side of fries. Both burgers left us almost drunk with satisfaction & there is something special about the seasoning on the fries. Never over salted, but just perfect & exactly what you want for a weekend treat meal. The loaded fries are a meal in themselves. I really have to accolade this place because we gave some negative feedback on our 1st visit (for the record, the top quality food was never an issue). It's a really huge credit to a business to get negative feedback & just continue to improve without biting back. Keep on doing what you do well guys. Happy locals that will be coming back!

A bit meh. Especially for the prices The meat in the burger was great, smokey and well cooked. But they ruined it by serving it on a yellow sweet desert bun that conflicted with the taste and generally ruined what should have been an equally pleasant part of the burger. The bun felt stale too. Guys it’s a burger! Not a doughnut! The cheese too was flavourless and appears to be some kind of processed Kraft cheese singles affair The onion rings are about 99% batter and no onion. Too much to eat and enjoy without feeling ill and blocked up. The location is nice though and relaxed. The lack of table service is a bit of a burden against the back drop of the prices but that maybe due to staffing shortages. Overall it is OK. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here. But wouldn’t avoid either.

To be fair the food on its own ain’t too bad. Decent burger and tasted decent. But everything is subject to a comparison. And when you compare the food to the price you paid, which in this case was $70+ for 2 burgers (no fries), a kids meal and 1 shake. It’s extremely steep and suddenly it’s definitly not worth it. Especially when the burgers are also on the small side and the kids meal is for toddlers. Honestly I was genuinely disappointed when I saw the food portion, though yes it did also genuinely tasted decent. All in all if the meal was like $50 ish, I will forgive it. But at $70 is rather have went else where. Many people will continue to love this place, and the food is decent. But I guess I’m too poor to enjoy this joint.

Tried this place the other night — ordered “the burger”, “chicken Katsu burger”, some chips, onion rings and two non-alcoholic drinks.

Overall:

• food = fantastic, cannot fault the quality. The size of sides however, is on the smaller side, especially considering the higher price.

Bonus points for also offering GF bun options (thank you!) — as a coeliac this is hugely appreciated!

• service = generally good. However, there was a bit of confusion with us (and other customers) as to the seating situation. We stood around for a while waiting to be seated (?) and staff initially just went about their business and didn’t really acknowledge us.

Staff did admittedly look busy, so it’s completely understandable if they don’t have time to tell each customer walking in to pick their own table. However, perhaps some signage outside to tell people to choose their table and scan the QR code to order would be beneficial?

Outside of this, the girls who brought our drinks and food out were lovely.

• ordering system = the only negative — (don’t get me wrong, I love the convenience of QR ordering) just be sure that once you place your order you don’t just click through the confirmation windows on your phone quickly like I did.

Take note that there is a tipping screen (which is a bit strange admittedly, as there is no table service?) and that on the very last screen to confirm payment the subtotal suddenly changes to add in a 15% “service charge”.

Obviously this wasn’t a big deal and had I known, I still would have continued to order. Maybe this is also only on public holidays?

Anyway, customers should be better notified about any such surcharges before they even begin to order their food and again before they process a transaction, otherwise it can look...

I went for breakfast with a friend last Sunday, it was a beautiful day, lane cove was bustling and Sunset Diner was empty. I haven’t experienced breakfast there before and now I understand why no one was there. The service was poor, we got our own menus took ourselves to a table with very uncomfortable metal chairs and returned to the counter to place our order. I understand the payment needs to be made prior due to the openness of the restaurant and none payment risks, but a little more hospitality & welcome would help. The food was average and tasteless I had folded egg because they couldn’t do scrambled (head scratch) my friend had Avo on toast with folded egg. The presentation was poor. Coffee was ok not great and the music was too loud. It has a very franchise feel about the place, with the inflexibility ‘this is how we do it- take it or leave it’ (maybe it is) To be fair the burgers are delicious if a bit exy. This place has potential to be amazing and in a perfect location. Sadly it let itself down by a few very...
