SUN WAH - CANTONESE CUISINE - CHINESE RESTAURANT ! — Restaurant in Tasmania

The healthiest meal I've had in many a long year. Fish and vegetables. Steamed rice. Not my usual "go-to" (think Macca's or pizza) but I had an urge for real food and Sun Wah Chinese Restaurant stepped up to the plate-so to speak. An unassuming exterior-small and badly-lit area attached to an unmanned petrol station. An even less promising interior-oddly placed tables forcing patrons to crab-step their way through to the counter. A fairly limited menu, although I prefer this to one with too many choices, especially in a small town on a quiet night. Overall, the bar was set to about 2cm. A couple of locals, giving off Wolf Creek vibes added to the general ambience, but hunger won over caution and thank Heaven for that. Fish so fresh it was still swimming. Vegetables popping with colour-and lots of colour at that. Orange, green, red-pretty, fresh, tasty. Rice was perfectly cooked, plentiful and more-ish. This was a seriously healthy meal and absolutely delicious. The chef/cook here is honest, generous and skillful, and it's almost worth moving here just to ensure that Sun -Wah becomes your Chinese cafe. Travellers-try it, you'll like it. Scottsdale...

Not sure how they have 4.5 star rating. Must be specific days to get a decent meal. We had a few dishes from here & overall, very disappointed. None of our dishes looked like the photos, waited over an hour. Spring rolls were so oily, when I squeezed them the oil dripped out, dim sims were frozen from the supermarket, prawn cutlets were oily bread with a shrimp paste on it. Mongolian beef was tasty but sinewy meat, chicken & cashews again tasty but, chicken was dry. Best dish was garlic king prawns & fried rice. Will never get Chinese from there again. Very embarrassed serving...

From the moment I walked in I was confident that I would not be disappointed. I was in Asia in the 1980s and this was an immediate step back in time. The food is totally authentic. Not like the western fast food style dishes that is so common in Australia leaving you full and uncomfortable. If your happy to wait for the lovely owners to prepare from scratch, a beautiful refreshing meal that's not full of thick rubbish batter and tons of sugar than this is the place to eat. Its cash only and byo with no corkage. Patience is a virtue and its definitely worth...
