Original review: Terribly rude customer service. Walked in the door at 4pm, asking ‘are you still open’ (says open on the door and their opening hours are listed until 5pm on google). I was greeted by who I assume was the owner stating “I will not be cooking! It’s late.” Why did you say you were open then? Do yourselves a favour and do not eat here. Terribly customer service and NOT a kid friendly place. Absolute waste of time and money. I actually cancelled my order, refuse to support a ‘small business’ that is rude and unprofessional.

Response to owners reply below: We tried to order 1 serve of nachos when you rudely stated ‘I won’t be cooking anything for you! It’s late!’ And scoffed. My mother responded telling you that was totally fine and she would happily order a toastie instead (which she went ahead to do and pay for). I however refused to purchase my order, as I will not spend money supporting somebody who speaks this way to a customer.

We had come out as a family on the anniversary of a loved ones passing, to have a quiet coffee and toastie. We did not need to be greeted with your rude remarks, tone and attitude towards us (and a 5 year old!) for ordering from a menu we were not made aware wasn’t available. If you addressed your customers in a friendly and professional manner, there would have been no issue and I would have placed my order happily with the options you had available. We did come in to your shop at 4pm, however you are open until 5pm supposedly. Hence why we were very shocked and disappointed in your rude/sarcastic greeting when we tried to order food (that you have advertised on your blackboard right above the kitchen). We expected given your role that you would be helpful and professional at the very least. We were previously customers for over 8 years and we sadly won’t be supporting your business anymore.

The child we had with us that you speak so inappropriately about, is 5 years old. Yes she excitedly expressed she wanted a kiss biscuit to eat (and she was impressed & excited that they looked so yummy!), however she was not being loud or acting in a manner unacceptable for a 5 year old, and I do not appreciate being told to handle a child better next time we go out. What an inappropriate thing to say to a paying customer, particularly as a business owner.

Perhaps you should handle your customer service skills and the running of your ‘business’ a bit better. Your response to my review highlights exactly what I was reviewing - it only takes to read your responses to people to know what I’m talking about. The cafe is not family friendly (or friendly at all actually!) and customers have a right to be aware of this before they come here, particularly with children.

I know multiple families who have spoken of this experience also when bringing children into your shop. Perhaps the problem is not with parents handling their kids a bit better, but with your attitude towards the innocent children. Please treat your customers with more respect and kindness, you never know what people go through in their own lives, and you should also be reminded that without customers support, you have no business to run.

I continue to edit my review because you continue arguing and belittling a paying customer in your comments. You are making personal and inappropriate digs towards my family and it is appalling. All because I did not give you a 5 star review, sorry but you could not provide a 5 star service! My review is honest based on what you provided.

Every person who walks into your store is entitled to an opinion on the behaviour you happily display, and also entitled to write a review on google - that is what this is meant for. You have displayed your inability to provide respect and professionalism to anybody else, that is loud and clear in all your comments for all your...

Second visit to New Norfolk last week and I thankfully remembered this place from our travels last year. It didn’t fail to impress the second time around!

We stopped for some coffee and cakes, our son had a colossal strawberry milkshake - my only wish here would be that a child-size portion could have been provided as $5.50 for a three year old’s drink is a bit excessive, but alas I didn’t mind helping him to finish it! It’s value for money for the portion size but would be nice to have a half size for $3 or something, just a suggestion. I did ask but was told only one size available.

Our cakes were divine, my latte coffee served in a huge glass as it should be and amazing quality.

And then the decor! This needs a review all of its own as it’s incredible. A step back in time to numerous eras - there is a kitsch and eclectic collection of vintage sewing machines and 70’s sideboards. 60’s mixers, and aprons from the 50’s. The furniture is so funky throughiut! A great selection of reading material too - I picked up a great book about Herbs (which I’m now trying to buy online as I only glanced a page or two!) and the Mr found some good mags. Each seating area is divided into a quirky section and I wish we’d been staying long enough to try each one! We sat by the window, being that it offered a retro little high chair seat for miss 5months and she adored playing with the beads on the chair which, at a guess, was made in the late 60’s, maybe even before! So cute!

There was even a basket of toys for our toddler which always goes down well, thanks for that Mrs Cake Lady!

I used the restroom to the rear of the property and found yet another exciting area of seating, I can imagine it being beautiful to sit outside with a book in the summer surrounded by all the fascinating oddities :)

Hope to revisit the next time we’re New Norfolk way, I could spend a day just shooting all the artefacts and thoughtfully set out space.

We traveled from Kingston just for a drive out with no children, we got hungry so stopped at this cafe, we asked for 2 coffees and the coffee was actually quite nice.......... BUT THEN we had ordered a chicken, bacon with chilli and lime mayo (burger👈🏻) this was like one strip of bacon but there was more fat on the bacon than meat, there was (n this is no lie) literally not even a portion of chicken to cover half of the roll, not a burger 🍔 but a roll, I got the attention of a staff member and asked, is that all the chicken you get? To a reply from the badly trained member of staff with, it has bacon also, it’s not a chicken burger like a KFC burger! Obviously I no this! If I wanted kfc I would of gone and got one, to be honest I wish I would of thought of getting a kfc as this place was dreadful service and food. If you take time to look at the reviews of this place you will see that the owner or the boss of this place isn’t very professional and tells people not to come back but as for me, I don’t need to be told not to come back as this business is a failure and will not last, also when I asked if that was all the chicken, the rude ill trained member of staff nearly started crying, I think because she new that it wasn’t substantial for the over $10 aparant burger that was really like a bacon roll with one pice of bacon that wasn’t cooked properly possibly done in the microwave, as I say if you want a coffee it’s not too bad but to be honest there is better places like McDonald’s or KFC. I hope the people who read this like honesty because this is a 100% truth of this cesspool! Maybe try subway...

A Delightful Sojourn at The Cake Lady Café Upon stepping into this charming establishment, one is at once embraced by an ambiance both lively and nostalgic—a tableau of time itself, adorned with trinkets and adornments that whisper tales of yesteryears. The air hums with the spirit of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, a sanctuary where the past lingers, not as a specter, but as a dear old friend. Gracious were the hosts, whose warmth did not wane, even as the hands of the clock beckoned the close of day. Hospitality, in its truest form, was bestowed upon me, as though time itself had been granted a brief reprieve. Before me, a bounty of delights—an array of sweet temptations resting within a frozen vault, each beckoning to be paired with the rich embrace of coffee. As Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing in the Dark wove through the air, I found solace in a most exquisite chocolate milkshake—a potion of indulgence, each sip a sonnet to the senses. And lo, the faithful did not waver! Even in the waning hours, they arrived, drawn to this haven as moths to a warm and welcoming flame. Norfolk holds many treasures, but here, in this quaint corner, beats a heart of unwavering hospitality and cheer. My gratitude to the noble keepers of this fine house—your kindness and bright smiles shall not be soon forgotten!

Won't find a better spot to take your mum for Devonshire Tea mid-jaunt in the countryside. Cake Lady herself is both a sassy sweetheart and, although this might be inappropriate for her to read here, very easy on the eyes. Place is a stand out. 50's diner vibes all up and down without losing a distinct Tazzy homeliness. Places don't exist like this unless somebody loves them from conception. It is my hope that more of us can see and appreciate how unique this type of business is, and pay tribute by supporting it regularly. If I'm ever in New Norfolk again I'll definitely be back.
