My wife and I have driven past the Queen on the way back from town while staying in Bendigo and finally took the plunge. A quick look at the menu and all is pretty straightforward fare but there are very tantalising sides to be paired with your meal. We decided to go with the ribs battered onion rings and mac and cheese. With a serve of Cajun fries and a glass of the Chilean pinot not one part of the meal disappointed the Ribs cooked to absolute perfection (i would ask for some BBQ sauce because I'm a saucy sailor) were moist and the smoke was superb the mac and cheese with hamhock pieces was sumptuous but my friends the onion rings yes that cheeky humble onion rolled in a beer batter that is light and fluffy burst forward with flavour with the tartness of the onion meeting with the sweetness of the beer batter knocked it out of the park. I could go on for days but we don't have that much time. The Chilean red capped off the meal better than McGrath's baggy green. Tart but not overbearing flavours of berries with a hint of cinnamon and smooth to nose as well as palate. If you want value as well as quality you should hold your horses like Ben Hur in a Chariot race do not go pass go. Stop right now thank you very much and make your way to the Queens Arms. The general vibe was lively and great, the bar staff were great, but the main reason I went there was for the food.....it was sadly underwhelming. The Lobster and Chorizo Thermidor entree was served on bread, and it barely covered the two small slices of bread, but worse was the fact that the flavour was non-existent. This was followed by the Chicken, Corn and Chorizo house-made pie which came sitting on a bed of mash, with some runny gravy (presumably it was gravy) and peas poured over the top. I could best describe it as hearty, but again bland, with no real detectable flavour. Overall what started out as a great evening ended up with a deflated feeling. Since then I have found out that one other friend in our large group sent their meal back to the kitchen because it was so poor, and another basically left everything uneaten without sending it back...in other words, almost 20% of our group were very unhappy...
